RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
I used to say the same thing a long time ago ,that is keep the approaches steep , but with the C/G in the correct place you can float the model in and put it down where you like with full flap .
HoweverIdid have the same thing happen on Sunday when a club member said I was far to high in the approach for a landing , after he saw it sinking in he took back his assessment of what is too highon finals for a warbird with flaps . I Likea steep approach with everthing hanging down ,that is the way I do it ,looks great, but if you are landing short, having the ability to fly itin is good . Graeme |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
If I use my flaps it's with a steep approach. No flaps and headwind and I fly it in with some speed.
Mine is in the hanger for a complete glass job. Like this plane so much it's getting the full treatment so it will last for a long time. The Saito 36 is the perfect motor for this plane too. Almost no vibration and long flights. Need a new spinner for it though as the Hanger 9 ones suck :D Anyone tried installing a retractable tail wheel in one yet? Jeff |

ORIGINAL: djstar39 Listen to the Ripper on a separate battery for the gear!!! Dave When you then consider it, neither the weight nor the cost of the second battery are a good enough reason NOT to do this very simple system improvement for your 16 pound, $1600 airplane! Rip |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
ORIGINAL: djstar39 Hey Rip, While flying her last week I came in for my landings and each time a club member told me I needed to go around because I was too high. Remembering your 'Don't drag it in on the prop' comments from long ago, I put Frankie in a moderate dive on final with those big flaps hanging down and about 1/3 throttle and brought her in for some pretty landings. The secondary sound of the air going past those flaps is awesome. :D A little unnerving at first until you figure out she won't pick up speed with those big barn doors hanging down. Just a note for you newer Frankie pilots.... Dave Added secret: after flairing do not chop the throttle below 1/4; she'll slow down on her own and settle on the mains (then chop the throttle) because the flap drag is no longer being offset by gravity assist... Just finished cutting the webbing braces. For any late-comers or those that want to add the bracing now, I've attached a jpeg of a Visio drawing with dimensions. I cut my ply on the table saw and used my drill press for the 1" hole. Fit is very very close and the first one fit in quite well (there is only one way they will go in though because of the LG rails).
Right now I'm waiting for the glass to dry on the first round of glassing .. then I'll epoxy these in place and glass reinforce tomorrow. How may of you went with Robart Hinge points on your ailerons? And if you did, how many did you put in? Putting in 3 Robart Hinge points is my plan ... I don't trust the CA hinges ... For those NOT running the bombs ... what did you do to close up the holes in the bottom of the wing? Oh BTW ... the ply piece is 2 3/4" by 2/1/16" (top and left dimensions) .. dimensions on the right and bottom are to mark the 1" hole center if it isn't clear ... Dan |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
Anyone think the Evolution 40GX will make this plane scoot?
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
I am hoping so ... right now I have mine mounted on a break-in stand .. need to get a gas tank and hook up the throttle to lever. The plan is to break in on an 18-8 but I will probably go bigger on the airplane ... maybe a 3 blade or even a 4 blade if I can find one I like and get good at landings!
Will keep you posted as I get the Evo mounted in the airplane. If you search back through the thread you can find pics of someone that has already put one in. Post #830 by dgliderguy has pics of an Evo35 installed ... scroll down this page to 830 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_51...#ixzz0t9FXSnwr Dan |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
The EVO should be about the same as my Saito 36 as far as power. Mine is pretty fast... almost as fast as when it was electric ;)
It would be fun to put a DA-50 in the plane. That would make it scoot for sure. You might also be able to swing a larger 4-blade prop too. There would be a lot of motor hanging out of the cowl, but if you want speed it would be a nice setup. Jeff |

I'm building mine to look like the one in the picture.
I'll be running a 18" 4 blade Solo on it since we're at 5000'. If the 35 is plenty then the 40 will be sweet. It fits just like the 35 too. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
Ran the 40 on the test stand today. It is a sweet running engine. It idles so well that I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. And a 10 ounce tank ran it for over 20 minutes ... I'm so incredulous over that fact that I'm going to have to time it again just to make sure I didn't screw the timing up somehow. My initial estimate is that I'll have _PLENTY_ of power. I'm going to try to get two more days like today so that it will have 60 minutes of break-in time before it goes in the plane. At the rate it sips gas, I'll be running it on break-in fuel for the first 8-9 hours of flight time (1.5 gallons).
Finished up glassing / reinforcing the wings .. starting on the ailerons / flaps next (my corsair is stealing time at the moment!) Dan |

Looks great thanks... One more question Capt. Where did you get the exhaust manifold?
Thanks Steve |
RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
Not sure what the Cap'n has on his but you can get a pretty nice replacement for the one that comes in the kit from Pacific Scaled Aircraft.
