Ziroli small 70" P-47D.. what glow engine to use?

I originally posted this question in the RC Scale Aircraft forum.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_39...tm.htm#5417442

I am looking for suggestions on which glow engine to use for a 70" ziroli P-47D weighing about 18 lbs.

Some options I am looking at are
OS 1.60 FX and BGX 3500
Supertiger 2300 and 3250
DPM Blue Head 1.80 and 2.10

What size do you think is needed for this size/weight model.

Thanks

The DP 180 or a YS 140 FS should fly it nice. Not 3d but a little faster than scale. Rich

My 80" , 18.5 pound Zero with a OS 160 and 17x10 flys fast. My 83" 17.5 pound claude flew well with a Saito 180 and 17x8 prop. What engine does Ziroli recommend? If a G-26 or G-38 then your lower end should do well. If you want to go real fast then put more power in it. I would think a 8 or 10" pitch should be a go fast.

Thanks for your feedback. Ziroli recommends a G-38 gas for power. I think my model will be on the heavy side ~18 lbs and I like to have some reserve power so I can get out of trouble.

The G-38 is a heavy not so powerful engine. From what I have read about it the Zenoah's are very reliable. If you can keep the tail light then you could use a lighter motor and save a pound or so. That would be signifigant. It is often possible to package your receiver battery (even increase capacity and/or cell count to five instead of lead) next to a glow engine to reduce lead. The Moki 1.8 is kind of heavy at 44 or so ounces but a great motor and powerful, I had one. The OS 160 is much lighter but not as powerful, the Saito 180 less powerful still. I have not used YS engines but they seem very powerful. I don't like to spend money on nitro and try for simple reliable motors. The max nitro I use is 10% even in Saito's. The old Moki's (before DPM) run on 0% nitro.

At 17.5 pounds I also would use the Saito 180. It should fit in cowl and be easy to exhaust. Works for me

carlbecker saitos manual states at least 15% nitro.i dont have the big ones but have a 91 and 72 and they like 20 to 30%

Thanks all for your feedback. I think the choice will be between the OS 1.6FX or the Satio 180

RE: Ziroli small 70" P-47D.. what glow engine to use?

Well I guess I need to read the manual or just keep doing what works for me - Saitos must have lower compression so I lose some rpm but they idle and transision well. I use only two different fuels both 10%. I need to use special fuel for my BVM 96 ducted fan - 23% oil. All other motors use 10% or I sell them. I have no problems with my Saito 120, 180, 325 older single plug or 450 new dual plug. The OS 108 and 160 are happy and so is the Webra 120 and Laser 120. I sold my old Moki because it liked 0% and I will not have another can of fuel. I have tried one gallon of 30% and the 450 really drank it fast! I find I have to richen the needle when I go to higher Nitro and then have shorter flights. I probably go through 5-6 ($45 per) cases a year so every dollar adds up. I have not had any problems with power to weight ratios and get "scale" or better performance from my planes. I prefer to fly in a scale manner most of the time unless I get a hair up my rear.

I would use 0% nitro if I could find and get away with it.

For your engine choice decide how you want the plane to fly. Lots of folks like the "need for speed". Sometimes I do, keep your plane light so it flys well. Try a 8" pitch and 10" pitch prop to see the change in performance. Keep the tail light and put heavy items up front if it doesn't balance. Radial Warbirds usually have a short coupled nose. There is room in the cowl to pack things in there safely. Keep us posted on how things work so everyone learns.
