CMP Zero 80" 50 cc model
I just purchased a CMP Zero 80" 50 cc model. The engine is a DL 50 with a Pitts style muffler
http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c...3_2010_8537840 http://www.cmpairplane.com/warbird/Z...gasengine.html I have several questions and I would appreciate your help. - Retracts: I want to replace the fixed landing gear with some retracts. Anybody knows which retracts would fit this plane ? - Servos: I want to use Futaba servos. Any suggestions on which servos to choose ? Recommend torque ? - Cockpit: Have anybody seen a company doing a cockpit that would fit this model ? I wonder if this Sierra retracts would fit http://www.sierraprecision.com/prod35.html http://www.sierraprecision.com/images/YellowZero.JPG They are supposed to have 85 degrees for scale angles. It looks like http://www.shindinmachine.com could have a set also (that would require some minor wing modification) Robart has a 90º one... http://www.robart.com/retracts/drawings/153.pdf Century Jet has a retract system that is supposed to fit perfectly http://www.centuryjet.com/webstore/m...roduct_ID=1178 |
RE: CMP Zero 80" 50 cc model
Hey Gonzalo38, One thing I know about this plane; I owned one about a year ago, I tried everything to balance the plane. Check and re-check and make sure the plans are correct where they tell you the C.G is. I almost crashed mine, maiden flight do to tail dropping like riding a roller coaster. So I re-checked from what the instructions said was the C.G line. I added more nose weight and still the same thing. I ended up the second time putting the plane nose first from about 100 feet straight up. So they are tail heavy, and the instructions are wrong about the C.G. I think I still have my old plans, I could look and see if they changed it. Good luck; other people say there's fly fine, so it was just a C.G issue with mine. starcop

Starcop:
Thanks for the CG tip. I will make sure to take a close look at that and maybe I will ask somebody with really good fingers to do the maiden flight..... :D |
RE: CMP Zero 80" 50 cc model
Here are my tips on this plane......
Do not put the servos in the tail like shown. You need to put everything as far forward as possible. A friend of mine just finished one of these and with the servos all the way forward two battery packs a Brison 3.2 up front it still needed 2 lbs of lead. As far as retracts he used the Robart 633 which came with 1/2" struts and worked out great. He did have to modify the retract area due to if you notice that they are designed for a wire strut that is bent just after the retract rails. It was an easy mod just use your head and you will see what to do. Plane flies great no bad habits. As far as cockpit Dynamic Balsa has one for the 1/5th size which would be a bit big but might work with a bit of work. You could order one from Yellow Aircraft there Zero is the same size. Just remember the most important thing is keep the weight as far forward as possible. Servos you just can not go wrong with Hitec 645MG they are very strong and Tower has them at a good prive. Servo City also has them. |
RE: CMP Zero 80" 50 cc model
Gonzalo.
Good luck with your build! Keep us posted as you progress. This zero is a fantastic flyer...i'm going on a third season with mine. Here are a couple of tips i would consider if i were to do it all over again. -Don't use the hardware supplied..its all metric stuff....just go buy you some 4-40 stuff, then get some robart hinges (the ones supplied are of cheap material) -If you are using a 50cc gaser..re-inforce the back side of the firewall with some cloth..especially where the vents are on the forward side fuse...the glass is very thin in that area -Don't use the supplied cowling ring mount...it will eventually delaminate itself and cause pain and suffering down the road...just go get you some nice aircraft ply..trace the patern out, and make your own. -If you are going to use your own retracts..tear out the gear rails..they are pretty soft wood...re-inforce that area with cloth and some better quality wood. Other than that..i built the airplane just how they had it set up...with the servos in the back as well...i had the same CG problem as mentioned before..i moved the CG about a half inch or so forward....seems to fly right on now. You won't have to worry about weight...mine came in at about 20 lbs...and i glassed and painted the entire thing...not to mention mine has a 40cc in it..flys it very well. Anyways good luck! and take a look at this thread i started last year concerning the zero..hopefully it will help! Bubs http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_64...tm.htm#6485074 |

RE: CMP Zero 80
What size and type struts would be recommended I'f I plan not to go with retracts ?

Well after asking the same question like six times, I'm sure someone will have an answer....

RE: CMP Zero 80
Here's my suggestion:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Class_2pc.html Make up a mounting block from hardwood and install them into the block in place of the factory retract. Hopefully this will stop the Zombification of posts that are long dead. ;) |
RE: CMP Zero 80
I need the dimensions of the cowl for this plane. I crashed mine last year and the poor cowl was a total loss. I have a good friend that works with fiberglass and he said if I can get the total dimensions of the cowl he would mold me a much stronger cowl. I need to know the total inside width and the total length. We are making a 3/4" plywood firewall and fiberglassing the whole front of the fuselage from the inside for added strength The plane needs so much nose weight to balance we dicided to stenghten the whole front of the fuselage.

RE: CMP Zero 80
Hello Gonzalo, which CMP Zero you have, 1800 mm wingspan or 2100 mm wingspan?
On my big CMP Zero (2100 mm wingspan) I put Robatr 635 gears. http://www.nsmodelers.rs/warbirds/zero/zero-upgrade Model have at the end 12 kg, if I remember right I need to add 1,2 kg lead!!! Of course, all servos and everything was as forward as possible. Engine was G 45. Don't worry about weight, Zero fly like a dream... http://www.nsmodelers.rs/warbirds/zero Best regards Mirce |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Mirce,
I have the 2100mm Zero like you. Can you please messure your Cowl and give me the dimensions. I need to build me a new cowl and my other one is distroied. Thank You |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Hello Jim, I'm sorry, I can't, because I sell my model two years ago...

Thank You Hi Jim, I will messure for you it on this Friday. Now I´m not at home, so I can´t. I also have CMP Zero 2100mm, it´s not problem for me. |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin,
Thank you so very much for your help. Looking forward to hearing from you. The Polikarpov I-16 is almost ready just waiting for good weather.;) |
RE: CMP Zero 80
So where are some picture of I-16. I´m looking forward to see them! ;)
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
Here are the latest pictures but I think you my have already seen them. I think it will be another month before I can do the maiden flight. The weather here is really windy and damp this time of year.[:@]

Sorry forgot the pic's. here they are.
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
Yes, you are right, I´ve just seen them, but they are still very nice! Maybe, your weather is bether then the weather here. Now here is something between the snow and total "sh*ts". Three day ago here fall down more than 10cm of the snow, but today the temperature was up to 7°C. Two weeks ago was snowy weather for 4 day and after them was the weekly average tempereture about 5°C and rainy weather. :D
So what I can do? Close the door in my workshop and do the progress on the projects. I hope, you understand me. This article was very difficult for english writing. [:o] |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin,
Yes I understand you very well and I know what you are saying about the weather. Here in Tennessee we do not get very much snow but we do get a lot of cold wind out of Canada the comes down the Mississippi river valley. It brings a cold rain when it blows. Then the next day we get warm weather out of the south fron the guld of Mexico and when the cold are get together with the warm are we have very windy days wlong with rain and even a Tornado once in a while.[:'(] I will have to wait for spring to get hear beofr I think I will be able to fly the Rata.;) i too am working on other project in my workshop ring now. One is the rebuilding of my CMP Zero. I really like the way that Zero fly's. Have a nice day and agian I thnk You for your help with the messurements of the Cowl for the Zero.:D I wish I could communicate with you in your native tong. |
RE: CMP Zero 80
We can say, you have very similar situation with the weather. Instead of the snow, you have rain :D
I´m very fear my CMP Zero, because the weight is about 11000 g. My ESM La-7 now I´m remakeing into La-5 FN, was 7700 g. [:o] You can try to speak my language. But, when I spent one month in the England, I wans´t able to teach my host family some basic phrases. Czech language is difficult for western states. I have Rata and it is really nice warbird. (Já) Mám Ratu a je to velmi hezká st*hačka. ((Ja) Mam Ratu a je to velmi hezka stihacka) :D Y меня есть Paтa, это очень краси́вый истребитель. (In the Russian) |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Yes it is a very nice fighter. It reminds me of a Gee Bee R2. I hope I get this right in Czech language .
Ano, je to velmi pěkný bojovn*k. I mi připom*ná Gee Bee R2 |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin,
I am sure your Zero will fly really good at 11000 grams. My CMP Zero came out at 9500 grams and flew really well at that weight with a 46cc gas engine and a 20x10 prop. Did you get the ESM landing gear for your LA-7? That is the landing gear I am using form my CMP Zero and it works really well. Did you put all of your servo's in the fuselage.? I had all of my servo's as far forward as I could get them and mounted all of my batteries in the cowl with the engine. I still had to add another 900 grams of weight[:'(] to get it to balance at the CG point of 140mm from the leading edge.:D |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Excellent!
The "fighter" depends on the content. You can understand it as a "bojovn*k" (for ex. Rambo, Mark Tyson, some gladiator...) But now, I know, that you are talking about the WW II warbird, so I understand it as a "st*hačka". Sometime we can omit subject ("it"= "to") Přopom*ná mi (to) Gee Bee R2. You should change the word order. The "I" in your second sentence is probably mistake of the translator. Google? For me, is the biggest problem the articles (the,a, an). We don´t have them in the Czech, so sometimes I don´t know, where I have to use it. :D And I agree with you. It looks like the Gee Bee R2. Soviet forces had a lot of aces on this fighters. I don´t understand how they were able to fly this "cabrio" aircrafts during the Russian winter. The temperatures were around -20, -30°C. |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Yes, I used ESM La-7 landing gear for it and home made tail gear (very heavy), I must change the tail gear. All equipmet even the elevator servos I put as forward as it is possible. I used DLE 55 and I made new heavy exhaust system. You can check it on this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_90...44/key_/tm.htm
Here is the video of the starting. The video was made by my friend. How can I past it right??? [:o] |

Prekin,
Very nice looking build of your Zero. I think you are a better builder than I am. Here are a few pic's of my Zero befor the crash. |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Wooow, the second picture is great!!! Low flight past. I´m not a big builder. A lot of work is did by my father, because I study aircraft engineering at the university in another city where I live. This is the reason, why I will be at home on Friday.

RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin,
Here is a video of the maiden flight of my Zero that a good friend took that day. Hope you enjoy it.;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKXJMX4Hh3U |
RE: CMP Zero 80
It was very dangerous situation. The batteries could has bad impact on the C.G. I would be happy if, I would managed this situation like you.
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
Thank you for the nice comments. I was very lucky that day the damage was minor. Know all I need is a cowl so I can fly the Zero once again.:D
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
I don´t know how big is the damage of your cowl. But maybe the easiest way is buy other one.
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
I have been looking for a cowl for a year now for it. My friend said he could make me a cowl and all he needs is the dimensions. He said he can make it much stronger then the original cowl.;)
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
hmmmm, as I see it is out of stock in our shop. So wait for this friday. :D I will send it.
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
Thank You I am really looking forward to getting this information from you. Have a great week at school.:D
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
I "hear" an irony in your "voice"! :D I´m in the middle of the last exam period- "beautiful time" :D
|
RE: CMP Zero 80
Hi Jim,
I have your dimensison with pictures. I think it will be easier because of my english. But now is some problem with the uploading the pictures on the RC universe. [:o] |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin,
Thanks for getting me the dimensions for the cowl. Just uplead them when you can. ;) |
RE: CMP Zero 80
Prekin ,
The CMP Zero will fly very well at 11000 grams (apprx 24.25lbs). The flight characteristics of this plane are exceptional given its weight . I wouldn't be concerned about it at this weight at all. |
