Hello gentlemen, Just thought I'd share some pics of the Spitfire's progress. Certainly not an original idea for a thread, but pictures of classic warbirds are always fun to look at. Here goes:

The next two pictures are of the new firewall I installed to accommodate the 3W-70 I'm stuffing in there. The second shot is from the inside of the fuse looking forward.

Made my own weel pants. I used the "Evan Quiros" method of laying up fiberglass cloth then cutting to shape.

Tail feathers. Notice the balsa horizontal stab. Drew my own plans with help from Chad Veich. He sent me a set of Brian Taylor plans that were a good platform to work from. A little too small however, so I drew my own. Came out great and tons lighter than the fiberlass unit that came with the kit.

Another view. I decided to cut out trim tabs. Should add a nice scale touch.

Working on the sliding canopy. I looked to Dynamic Balsa for their canopy rails. Holy Crap!!!! Pretty expensive for what you get!!! I made my own rails including the slider that goes inside. I may be selling duplicate sets of these on RCU if there is an interest.

Hey Mark,
I just saw that I called you "mike".... I'm so ashamed of myself right now ... :surprised

The other thing is that I saw that you want to put a 3w-70 into your spit... pretty big plant for a 1/5 model...
I was thinking about putting a ZDZ 40 in my Fw-190 D9... but now I'll go with the 3w-75i :D ... j/k
but I'm curious how you're going to fit that monster into the itty bitty spit there...

well thats about it...
greetings

Jakob

Jakob, In order to fit it in, I had to tear out the stock firewall and build a new one. Then I had to set the new one beck into the fuse about 1 inch. It is a tight fit, but it fits in great. The only thing you can see with the cowl on is the top of the cylinder head. A very nice clean fit, if I do say so myself. Teh muffler will be custom built and exit through the scale exhaust stacks. Again, an Even Quiros creation. I will put everything back in place and snap off a few shots. Stand by for those.

By the way, no offense taken in calling me "Mike."

Mark, Your spit is looking fantastic! Your gear doors came out better looking than mine, great job so far. Dont forget to put additional mounting screws on the cowl, or the 3w will shake it right off. I used about 6 nylon 10-32 bolts per side of the cowl on mine. Also, make sure your retract rails are reinforced, as nosing over ( as this one will do from time to time) puts a heck of a strain on the wing and retract area. Mine is down right now because my upper wing skin above the retract has started to crack. I plan on fixing it sometime soon when I reach a good stopping point on the me109. Again, great work so far and keep it up!
