RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Hi guys,
Sorry for delay in answering but I have been on ski Holliday, And have difficulties with wireless connection. But I am back and story will go on. First, thank you all for nice words, it means a lot for me as I am beginner. @zero - yes, that cower will be removable. When glassing is finished, I will glue piece of aluminum plate, very thin, 0,3 mm used from offset plate in printing industry. It will be 2 mm wider than cower so it will cover all mistakes if they exists. Other thing is that it will be thicker than wing so it will look like real cover, and as made from aluminum, it can be sanded on edges for weathering. Nice retracts Zero. Can you post some video please? And hinges are cheap ones because I could not find any other but it will work. They are from hobbyking http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_index.asp and hinges are “Hatch Hinge 33x9mm (10pcs)” with price of 1.79$ (for 10pcs) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=8279 @zero, you have to upload video on YouTube or Vimeo or some other video server, and then you will get link for that video that you can post here. |

L16pilot, I finally got to run the DLE 20. Started ran and adjusted good. It turned a Graupner 15-8 three blade prop 9,100 rpm. An OS 120 FS I had in the plane turned the same prop 8,250 rpm. This engine should have enough power for the Zero.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Great info bean , was thinking of gas for some of my CMP planes , figured i would have to go bigger but like the DLE20 . What is the weight of your zero
|
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
RBean - Thanks for the report on running the DLE-20...I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but including your report, I haven't seen anything to indicate the DLE-20 would underperform my Saito 125. I've still got a ways to go, but my Zero#2 should be done this Spring and I'll give a full pirep and photos....

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
LDM, the weight of my zero is 15 lbs. It is powered by a converted McCough 25cc engine with electronic ignition. Its a heavy engine but in the zero it didn't matter as weight was needed up front. I've got nine flights on the Zero and the power is sufficient. The DLE is in a VQ Hurricane. Its weight creeped up from 9.5 to 10 lbs with the gasser, probably because I put in two 2000 mha batteries. With as much power as the DLE puts out I'm thinking of putting one in my kit built Top Flight P-40. It's now powered by an OS 120. Can't take any more weight as it weights 12 lbs, but could use more power and I'm slowing converting to gas, getting rid of glow engines.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Ok so this is my attempt at the split flap I was reluctant in removing the trailing edge piece it seems to be a pretty stout piece and my concern was that I would weaken the structure so I opted to leave it be, as a result the flap is a little smaller then I would have liked and although I could have reduced the trail edge thickness to half it seemed to me that it would wind up very very thin on one side anyway this is my progress so far

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Zero-322, I was also concerned about the thin trailing edge, but my Top Flite kit built P-40 is that way. After I removed the sheeting on the Zero wing I used a wood rasp to remove slightly less that half the trailing edge. So far has not presented any problems but only have nine flights on the plane. Looks like it will be a while before I fly it again, unless I equip it with skis. Don't think so. I'm going to start on panel lines soon but not sure of the best way. Some people just use a regular #2 lead pencil. Then I'll see about some weathering.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
would you mind posting a close up shot of the trailing edge near the flap just so that I can gauge how thin I can safely go
Mike |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
The easiest way for me was to draw line and mark half thickens of trailing edge end than send with sand paper glued to some hard wood.
Because trailing edge is so thick, it is possible to send it for 2,5 mm.I will post pictures later and maybe you will get better picture. |

Misha If I may ask were did you get this piece from ? I have searched and can't seem to find it anywhere

Here is the wing. Red line is presenting half line of trailing edge.
It was sended till that line on that side and as high as ribs are on the other side. (I hope that you can understand me). I am using line (hope you can see it on picture) as guideline, to help me to send it uniformly. hinge for pivot point is this http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=8434 but to be exact it is one half of it and I have removed (you can do it witn knife or dremel tool) you can see it on first picture how it looks. second is when half is removed, and third is finished. hope that my explanation is not hard to understand. |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Hi Guys...been a while since I posted some progress...but I have been working on Zero#2:
These are the lower whgeel cover attachments. The covers are pretty stout once mounted. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0644.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0643.jpg These are the mods I made to the horiztontal stab and elevators. I cut 3/4" off the trailing edge of the stab, glued 1/4 trailing edge on, sanded to shape and glued to the fuse. Then, sawed off the leading edge of the leading edge of the elevators and glued on 5/8" balsa sheet to make up the difference. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0649.jpg ...shaped to fit and.... http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0651.jpg ...got the DLE mounted...fits really nice...and then I just couldn't resist putting it together to for a look-see.... http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0657.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...o/IMG_0658.jpg Well...back to the building board. |

Can somebody, please, measure this dimension (from l16 pilot picture) for me.
thank you. |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Misha I get 9 3/8" inches on mine but I'm using a 3 1/2" wheel and my retracts are in the stock location
I like the way you guys did your retracts by distributing the weight over multiple ribs and if I was to do it again I would probably do the same thing, however the the way I did mine I believe will hold up just as well Misha I looked on hobby king for the hinge and pivot point you described and it says there on back order and may take up to 4 weeks for delivery so I will have to use something else, but thanks for the info |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Thank you Zero322 for info. when I look at these long struts, i think that I did something wrong.
But problem is in wheel dimension and optically it seems that it would not be enough distance from the ground. But it is ok. It is only optical illusion. have you try on horizon hobby http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...?ProdID=SOT130 |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Mihsa - the measurement on my struts is 24.5 cm measured from the bottom of the wing surface...and I am using 3" wheels so I agree, it is likely an illusion. But, the Zero really does have small main wheels and long ...almost dainty...struts. I haven't calculated how scale in length mine are...but I like the looks and representation.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Pilot looking good buddy! god knows your quicker then me LOL I got the split flap figured out I'll post some pic sometime tonight, how close are we to that scale exhaust buddy ol pal ? :))

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Ok my solution for the split flap was to laminate a 1/64" piece of ply to the smaller flap I started out with, my reasoning for this is that on the trailing edge I would only have to remove the 1/64 in thickness and still get the full flap and keeping the trailing edge piece in tact, My first attempt wound up very warped and wavy looking were the flap was just the ply, I solved this by cutting the ply cross grain to the other piece gluing and pining it to the board over night now its perfect !

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Misha thanks so much for coming through again ! I ordered 4 packages of six just so that I will have a few extras when need be, well being that I have the wing opened up some what I figured since I'm here why not do a hidden linkage for the ailerons as well I mean " in for an inch in for a mile right" ? besides I have nothing else going right now project wise so why not ? I striped the ailerons of the covering cleaned them up so I'll probably hit my LHS tommarow and see what's available linkage wise plus gotta get some more servos I'll post pic of progress later

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
@Pilot Thank you for info. I know that original Zero had small wheels and long struts, but
I think that for my field is better to have bigger wheels. Sometimes I choose practicality over scale details. @Z|ERO I will not do it on my for now, but please send pictures of progress. From me RDS system is the best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg3zm0_ekJo&feature=player_embedded#! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nkQ2...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88tX3Fa89Jg&NR=1 |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Misha - I completely understand about balancing scale "correctness" with practicality and your decision is absolutely correct based on your field conditions. My local field is kept very well trimmed and my Zero#1 has no problems with the 3" wheels, so I know that works well for me.
Zero - I have a plan for the scale exhaust which involves relocating the two exhaust tubes on the J-tec Pitts muffler just outboard toward the edge of the expansion chamber. In addition, I will need to "re-contour" a few small areas of the expansion chamber for cowl clearance. I am a firm believer of not re-inventing the wheel and the J-tec muffler gets me 90+% of the what I need. The downside is that the J-tec muffler is aluminum and not everyone has access to a TIG welder...of someone who can TIG weld. The aluminum really seems thin on the J-tec...so I'm not sure how well a spool gun would work on a MIG setup. Another possible option would be to use an aluminum solder...I have some Slimline mufflers that are aluminum soldered together and they hold up just fine. Anyway, I am planning to start on the muffler this week....will post pics. |
RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
Ok Zero-322.....I got ambitious tonight and mocked up the scale-like exhaust outlets. I started with the J-tec Pitts muffler, cut off the existing outlet tubes at the base, bored some holes further out toward the edge of the expansion chamber and....voila! Now, I just gotta get it welded up.....urgh.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
what are we doing about the old outlets how are you planing on pluging those up ?
