RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

After all parts are cut, next step was to cut hole in fuselage for panel.
First, I had to find empty space , free of servos, cables....

I have used sandpaper and glue it inside fuselage with double sideadhesive tape, and send box to exact curve of fuselage.

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/6294/dscn2044h.jpg

After that, measures are drawn on the fuselage. Then, when you drill hole in one
corner of drawn rectangle, you can take it outside and mark hole from upper
side of fuselage. Then, after little cutting and sending hole was born.

I am quite satisfied with result of my work. Next on list, was to
finish panel box.

It has three elements, One hollow box that is glued to fuselage,
second box with panels and it will be glued to first one or maybe only
fixed to it (for disassembling if needed) and third is cover.

I will put lithographs plate that will be 1 mm wider on each side of cover.
But, it shall be done tomorrow.

You are so right. I want a Zero. I lost my build/plane room do to needing a roommate because I got laid off. Right now all I have room for is my heli and a couple of foam birds. Hey....does anyone know of a nice foam Zero?

I did build a TF Red-Box Zero back in 1986 or 1987. Showing some age here. LOL

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

I feel your pain on not having a whole lot of room to play in ! LOL been there done that ! But hey nitro planes has this one for around 175 bucks talk about a steal !

Misha what method are you using to secure the panel door to the fuse ?
I will use little pin on one side, and magnet on other side.
on the side of magnet, will make little lever made of "T" pin.
Will post pictures tomorrow.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

One problem I'm having is the tail wheel - rudder hook up. I'm using the kit supplied hardware. Steel rod (1/16 -3/32" ??) with collar with two small set screws to hold control arm. If you get much side load on the tail wheel it causes the control arm to turn on the shaft, changing one rudder position. Not much room in there to work. I'll have to figure out some thing to fix this. Can't remove collar to grind flat spots etc. Other than that, no operational problems with the Zero.

ZERO-322 03-21-2011 08:51 PM

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

I sure hope someone chims in I haven't even looked at the tail wheel assembly let alone given it much thought, would be nice to have this figured out

Bean you said your using the kit supplied hardware ? this was my plan as well, however I was wondering what your thoughts and feelings are re the carbon fiber tube set up ? My thought is this needs some kind of guide half way through the fuse , seems to have way to much slop as set up is shown in the stock configuration, or am I over thinking this part ?

misha034 03-22-2011 03:30 AM

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Zero & Bean,

I will use bowden for control of elevetor, something like this
http://shop.lindinger.at/product_inf...ducts_id=72571,
I don't like supplied push rods because they are heavy (going all way to tail )and other thing is that you have to put some reinforcer for it in fuselage.
For ruder I will use nylon (fishing) with pull-pull system

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Zero - 322,

I found the kit fiber-carbon tubes to be too flexible. I used different carbon-fiber tubes and metal rods from LHS which provided a stiffer arrangement. The elevators are fine but the rudder is still a bit spungy. Again the major problem is the control arm not being sufficiently secured to the rudder/tail wheel rod. Nice to have the control horns all internal, but there is not much room to work with back in the tail. I may try to re-work the rudder control.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Box for instruments is finally over. Like with the wing, it take much time to do even something not very complicated,
when it's done on the finished model and if you want to do it without much cutting ...

Usually, after I have glued mount box on the fuselage,I painted a small portion of it which will be visible from the outside.

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7788/dscn2077u.jpg

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2557/dscn2094r.jpg

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/4264/dscn2095w.jpg

While waiting for the glue and paint to dry, i have connecting components to see if it will all work.
On this pannel I have gauge pressure for the bottle, the valve for filling bottle, lipo battery charge indicator,
and two switches.

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/8167/dscn2096.jpg

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/241/dscn2097h.jpg

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/680/dscn2100f.jpg

Then, the panel is glued into the holder.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9008/dscn2102g.jpg

I have left cover a little sticking out of the fuselage, so that I can finally
send it to the measure when it is all dry. Tape is used because I did not wand to damage fuselage when sending.

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1505/dscn2106f.jpg

http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/7342/dscn2107m.jpg

Cover has pin on one side and a magnet on other, which serves as additional security on the other side.
Next to the magnet I drilled a hole 1 mm where L shaped pin will go through. This will be lever for cover opening.
When cover is on, magnet will hold lever, but it can easily be pulled for cover opening

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/7659/dscn2112.jpg

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4045/dscn2111a.jpg

I decided to make realisticaly looking cover. I made it of the sheet thickness 0.3 mm (offset (litho) plate but thicker, thinner is 0.15mm),
which can easily be cut with a scalpel and shaped easy. After cutting, I drew the line at which I typed rivets, and then glued it to cover.

Once that panel is painted it will give it a really nice look and function ! glad to see your progress and keep the pic coming !

I'm going to need to wire three batteries for this bird 1 flight battery, 1 retract battery (electric retracts) and the ignition battery I could simplify things by having a single battery for the flight and retracts but I wanted some redundancy for that little bit of reassurance, just not sure how its all suppose to go together ? I'm new to gas engines as a whole and have never really attempted such a complicated set up, I have tested everything individually and all seems well engine, electornics, retracts etc, just not sure how to marry all these things together ?

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Thank you Zero-322. I will have only one battery. This one
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9317

and this Ubec
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=6233

I am new in gas engines too, and that is reason why I am going with Zenoah magnetic ignition.
One battery, and reliable engine. Anyway, You can put some of your battery\s under the
cowl, so you do not have to add weight.

will post some pictures of servo instalation later.

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Misha - very nice work on the switch box...super job.

All - I haven't posted much recently, but still working on my zero. Right now, it's been primed wiht K-38 and sanded...hope to get next coat of primer on this weekend....sand...and then it'll be ready for panel lines and final coat of primer.

I read the posts on the kit's rudder/tailwheel set up....I don't like it either and constantly experience the same issues related by Rbean....so I made a new one piece rudder/tailwheel rod and soldered a steel arm for pull-pull cable setup. More work, but the end result is a light and very strong reliable set up.

Keep going guys...lookin' good!

I Have finally got myself a new Zero, It's a 91'' ARF from 2K ? never heard of them but it looks to be copied off the Ziroli 91'' Zero.
Going to spend a bit of time detailing this one hopefully & got a brand new Zenoah G80 twin gasser for $450 with two props included to put up front.
Now looking at paint scheme's but as yet dont know what model Zero it's modeled on, looks to be a A6M2 Type 22.
Should be arriving next week ...Getting excited !! [X(]

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread

Here is a little report what I am doing on wing of Misha's Zero in last few days...

Last time I wrote how I put a second layer of epoxy resin on wing surface.
After that, I sanded all wing, first with rough sand paper (100 grade), and after that I use smoother sand paper with thin sponge on the back (240 grade)...

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/1-54.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/3-52.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/2-53.jpg

Wing is now nice and smooth, but on surface like that, you can't see little holes or other damage. So, I use acrylic filer and spray it on the wing.

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/6-45.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/7-43.jpg

Now on the wing you can see all places that should be repaired...

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...irce/10-34.jpg

Wing on this Zero have wavy surface, which I like, almost same as a surface on real airplane.

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/9-36.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...irce/13-28.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...irce/11-33.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...irce/12-31.jpg

With acrylic filer I fix all small damages.
Than, again sand paper with sponge (240) and I was sanding wing until it become smooth like a glass...

Next step was adding panel lines and details on surface.
I find Zero ground plan with all details, scan it, and in Corel Draw increase it on model wing span. I get all measures for and between panel lines...
On my Roland cutter I cut 1,2 mm wide stripes and put it on surface following measures from PC scan...

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/7-45.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/8-43.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/9-38.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...irce/10-35.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/3-54.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/2-55.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/4-52.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/5-52.jpg

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...mirce/6-47.jpg

It be continued...

Regards

Mirce
