ORIGINAL: JohnnyS :) OK, here goes: 1. Wing stagger is negative. 2. Inline engine. The Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin was a British fighter aircraft manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company. It was used by the Royal Flying Corps and its successor, the Royal Air Force, during the First World War. The Dolphin entered service on the Western Front in early 1918 and proved to be a formidable fighter. The aircraft was not retained in the postwar inventory, however, and was retired shortly after the war. |

I think the error is mine: I was referring to the "V-8" engine used in the Dolphin as an inline engine, which may have been misleading.
Apparently (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inline_engine ) the use of "inline" in general refers to an engine with a single bank of cylinders in line. In aviation use specifically, it refers to engines with one or more banks of cylinders inline, as opposed to a rotary or radial engine. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :) |
