Default uss hammann

anybody have any plans for this destroyer. i always liked the look of destroyers over other ships so thats what i want to build also because they are a bit smaller and faster. the only problem is i don't have much money to invest into this hobby. i am willing to make it unarmed for the time being until i can build up enough funds for cannons.
if no one has plans for this destroyer than are there any for like a convoy vessal that i could build realitively inexpensively just to get my feet wet. i know quite abit about rc boats so i understand the power systems and all that its only the actual hull that i need a little help on.
another question that has probably been asked a gillion times before , does anyone know of a club in illinois, possibly near chicago. or maybe by my summer home in michigan, a town called Holland. any info would be much appreciated.
thanx in advance

Destroyers are a tough first build due to the amount of stuff that has to be crammed in. Especially in 1/144. The standard advice (not often followed, although I did) is to build a freighter first. It gives you training in combat ship building, maintenance, repair, battle awareness, etc. A liberty can be armed with a few .177 cannon if you desire. Another choice I like (one in the works) is the Kormoran - nice sized German freighter that can be armed as a commerce raider. George Goff has plans for both. I believe Ships n Scale had plans for a liberty in 1/96 (that you can scale down) a few years back, if your library has the magazine.

For your closest local club, try Midwest or Michigan Battle Groups[link=http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/rcnavalcombat/localClubs/]http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/rcnavalcombat/localClubs/[/link]

Best advice is to hook up with the local group first, go to a battle, and find out local sources/methids. Brian Furlotte, up there, does some really nice fiberglass liberty hulls, and will even help out with some of the prep work for a reasonable price.

You also might want to check out the Yahoo groups. Big Gun - BigGunsModelWarship, Small Gun - IRCWCC, and the buy/sell forum - BSTF
(go to Yahoo, click on Groups, and enter one of the above in Find A Group). You might find the message archives useful, as well as pictures, files, links (including links to plans sellers like George).

Good luck,

Wreno

i thank you for the advice. yes i have read that destroyers are a bit hard for all the reasons that you said. i would be willing to build a freighter first just to dabble in the hobby a bit. do you have any links for places that sell plans or kits of those freighters you mentioned? they sound pretty cool and i'd like to check them out. i used to drool over swampworks from time to time and was going to go back to there but they are gone.i have found the Battlersconnection.com place and they are pretty cool but i don't see any freighters.
any more advice would be greatly appreciated and any links would be extremely helpful. for now i will continue my search

Seems like Paul F built a DE for 1/72nd scale years ago. He found out later that it was too slow for the game. If you check, he is the webmaster for our current website, and he may be able to tell you what plans he used, and what class DE that was built.

Also check FloatingDrydock.com. They carry lots of DD/DE plans for WWII US fleet.
They may not be difficult to come by at all.
They have plans for the
TFW-DE133/4 USS PILLSBURY DE133

TFW-DE766/4 USS SLATER DE766(Cannon Class)

The Pillsbury has to be the same class as the Hammann, I would check into that set.

Swampworks is out of business. At least for combat warships. They will no longer be producing hulls.

http://floatingdrydock.com/
Just scroll down to plans. Click on the link

What you're looking for is ships of the same class. Use your Conways or Janes reference books to identify ship numbers of the same class as the USS Hammann, DE-131. In this case we find that floating drydock lists the
TFW-DE133/4 USS PILLSBURY DE133 a close sister ship referanced by ship numbers.
http://floatingdrydock.com/TFW2.htm#TFW
scroll down from the large ships Battleships=>Aircraft carriers=>Cruisers=>Destroyers/Escorts
. . The Hammann is a DE, so continue scrolling down through the list of TFW-DD=>TFW-DE.
There you can check the plan numbers and ship names for DE's where the
TFW-DE133/4 USS PILLSBURY DE133 is listed.
Choose the scale of plan you want. I typically choose 1/72nd scale, or the smaller cheaper scale, then rescale the areas of the plans I need for cutting templates. The rest of the plans I just factor enlargemnts or reductions as I build.

Once you have the plan number and description copied then, At the bottom of the page you can click for an order form or online ordering.

ok i found what class it is, it is a Sims class destroyer DD-412.

and i don't think im skilled enough yet to build from plans so i'll just try and find a boat that i can get instead of being so specific
thanks

Well if you decide to build from plans, the
TFW-DD483/8 - USS AARON WARD DD483 of the Benson/Gleaves class ships have the exact same hull dimensions. So you could use the hull lines from the Aaron Ward to build your hull, and then customize the superstructure to create a Sims Class DD

Some one in the ircwcc is selling a Gearing class hull from swampworks i think its still uncut and its a typical "paper" swampworks hull so its light (but may need some patches of FG on the ribs)

think it was mike deskin but not 100 % sure

you can find the ircwcc group on the yahoo groups department
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BSTF/messages (message 197)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IRCWCC/
i'm working on a slightly bigger ship then a destroyer at present .. a "tromp" class light cruiser but i have the ribs for a 1600 tonnes admiralen class destroyer cut already

good luck
