yes, you can use a 8.4v pack. wont hurt a thing. a 8.4v nimh puts out about the same power as a 2s lipo pack.

Wondering if i can get some help again. im trying to run a tenergy 8.4v battery in my volcano epx pro. the battery has tamiya connector on it. the truck has banana 4.0. is there an adapter i can buy to do this or is it now possible. i search on google for it and it comes up with some weird adapter that i dont think will work. can someone please point me in the right direction? thankyou.

There are adapters. Redcat is out of stock on them right now. Might still be able to find them online.

While the banana 4.0 plugs are decent, tamiya plugs are not upto the demands that brushless systems require. I have seen many tamiya plugs melt. Or at the least they get warped and then dont stay together properly.

I reccomend spending alittle extra cash and getting some pre-wired deans plug. then just cut off the plug on your ESC/battery and twist on the new plugs and tape.
you can buy a set like this on ebay. This ad has 2 ESC side and 3 battery side plugs.

Thanks again nitro. You're a big help. I ended up going with the deans plugs, they are working well. The truck is pretty quick with the 8.4 nimh. Just curious, I hear about people running 9.6 v nimh batteries in their Epx pro's? I didn't think the truck could handle it? What Would I need to eventually run a 9.6 nimh? I know i would need a ESC capable of an 8 cell, But would the stock motor be able to handle it? Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to an 8 cell? I want the truck to be fast, but not uncontrollable.

the stock ESC and motor can handle a 3s lipo pack. A 3s lipo has a peak charge of 12.6v!
So a 9.6v nimh is NO problem.
I think you would have to take the power lead from the fan on the ESC and wire it to run off the batt port on the reciever (because with a higher voltage battery the esc will send to much power to the fan, and the reciever will always give a constant voltage)
But other than powering the esc fan off the reciever, you dont have to make any changes.

Even a 2s lipo would be a bit faster than your 8.4v nimh. A 2s lipo is rated at 7.4v. but thats nominal voltage. peak voltage is 8.4v...and lipos will remain at peak voltage for much longer than a nimh pack (the power doesnt drop quickly like nimh packs)
Also, lipos are lighter. Less weight=more speed.

OH, its been awhile since ive had a caldera..but you also wanna think about how a 8cell nimh is gonna fit in the battery tray. You might have to trim the side of the tray for the 2 hump cells to fit.
