the 44 tooth...is that the 2 speed or the 1 speed??? I guess if you can find a gear that is the same setup it doesn't matter what the size is...I've got a few different spurs and a few different clutch bells for mine...but have to get it running good before I start messing around with ratio...Just remember, the 2 speed, you have to keep the same teeth difference as stock...so say you go 2 teeth smaller on the second gear, you'd have to go to a clutch bell that had the same first gear, and 2 teeth larger on the second gear...The lower the ratio, the less pick-up and more top speed..The way you figure out the ratio is you divide the spur by the clutch bell...so say you have a 44 tooth spur and a 16 tooth cb, your ratio wouold be 2.75:1 and if you had a 42 tooth spur and a 16 tooth cb, your ratio would be 2.625:1...also the smaller clutch bell spools up quicker where as the larger ones take longer to get up to speed, so if you had a 2.75:1 ratio with a 14 tooth cb, and a 2.75:1 with a 17 tooth cb, the 14 tooth would have more torque and more RPM...I hope this rudimentary explanation helps...Oh yeah, one other concern...Do You have Clearance for the changes you want to make...

you've got to keep the ratios the same or else when the car engages 2nd gear everything would strip out.
My stock 2 speed came with 47t and a 42t so maybe it'll work?

one more thing, making your spur gears smaller will increase top speed. Making the clutch bell smaller increases acceleration.
You'd want a bigger spur gear for more acceleration.

Cas, it's easier to find an aftermarket clutch bell (HPI threaded 2 speed works, I think Popper tried it), but you've got to keep the same ratio difference between 1st and 2nd as stock...I think the stock is 16 and 21 (or was it 20???) so if you want more acceleration, you'd have to trade off a little top end and go to a 14 and 19, or 15 and 20 (assuming I'm right about the 21 2nd gear...)

For the two speed i used the hpi 17 and 22 tooth threaded gears with the matching clutch bell (stock is 16/21). So far they work great, but I was surprised when i actually noticed a difference in acceleration. I didn't think one tooth would make much of a difference but it really did. I miss the peeling out and stuff. I was also trying it on some high traction baseball field dirt with some newer knobby tires, so that may have had something to do with it. Either that or my tuning was just way off. Really i'm just hoping to get a longer life out of the hpi setup. The stock clutchbell just wears out entirely way too fast.
I know Hpi makes some 52 tooth spur gears for 1st. I think the savage uses them. I've been looking at them, but they look like they'd be hard to retrofit. It also may just be too large around diameter wise...
Either way let us know if you try anything.
