Default Question about bottom

Can anyone tell me why there is openings on the bottom of the vehicles where the spur gears and flywheel are ? You would think if they were covered, less dirt could enter. The only thing I can think of is for cooling or ease of access. I am probably missing something obvious, I am quite new to all this. Thanks

Dunno, maybe so that dirt can't build up in there?

so stuff can be thrown out instead of trapped near the spur gears.

LOL, it's for a bump a box. The bump box wheel fits in that groove so it can rub against the fly wheel and turn the engine over

I squirt alittle grease in there with a syringe every so often, I figured that's what it was for.
