when you turn the engine over you should get a substational amount of compretion but if you get compresion at all (mid) you are ok if your engine goes Pluck Pluck Pluck you are fine but if you engine goes Woosh woosh woosh your engine is screwed...

the best way to check is when its warm, most engines have compression when they are cold but when warm will loose some, if you can pull the starter real easy when warm, its shot.

ya that is the other way... to check it when warm... and the other way is good to becouse you can check for scraches and dabree and rust...(make sure you do this when the engine is cold.) take your engine head off and pull out the sleeve and open the crank case by removeing the pullstart and makesure the spring does not come out (becouse it is a b**** to get back in) take the back plate off and check for rust then pull the sleeve out then slip the piston off of the crank and once it is out put the piston in the sleeve and and move it around if it is tight it is good and try to push the piston out the top of the sleeve if it comes out easily then your engine is screwed... but if it does not (dont force it just see if it stoppes) then your engine is good...
