regular alkaline are 1.5 volts each, rechargables are 1.2
1.5 x 4 = 6
1.2 x 5 = 6

same voltage, just more batteries

it really depends on your budget but the more mah the more output and longer it would last

You will need an adapter or a new switch, the avalanche has the 2 pin receptical for a AA battery holder not a hump pack which has a male three pin.

you just trim off a little off the plug on the hump pack to fit the 2 pin connector, the 3rd pin on the plug has nothing in it.
