Near nitro engine death experience

As the title says, my engine came close to death or so I thought. I decided to do some porting on the sleeve and the crankshaft that I read in a magazine. I didn't have as many ports as the article's engine had. After finishing on grinding and polishing, I cleaned all parts and used mystery oil to assemble the engine. I installed the engine and tried to run it. It acted like it wanted to start but wouldn't. If it did, it would only run for 2 seconds max. I thought I screwed up the engine by doing the mods to the sleeve and crank. But it would start only if I dropped about 3 or 4 drops of fuel in the carb and then die. So I thought I have a fuel delivery problem. So I started with the tank, fuel lines, and filters. I know I didn't have any air leaks in the engine since I used rtv silicone putting it back together. But luckily I had a new spare engine and swapped the carbs and it fired up and ran. It was running way rich. My table is covered in oil. But that's ok, at least it ran! It's ALIVE!!!!
I have ran about 10 tanks of fuel through the engine so I know it is broken in. I can't really feel any pinch in the piston/sleeve. But it has some very good compression and runs great.
Now my question is, how do I pull the old carb apart and see what the problem is?

the same thing happened with my friends engine on his rustler. the only time it would run is if i would put drops in the carb, so finally i messed with the neddles and i had to richen it up a lot and then it ran crappy. then it wouldnt run, and i would mess withe the needles for a while again and it would run like crap for a bit and then i would have ot mess with the neddles again till it wouldnt start at all. but we didnt do anything to the engine or anything.

Yeah, I didn't do anything to the carb. I was able to remove the barrel from the carb. It didn't look dirty or anything. So I have it soaking in some alcohol. I will put it back together and next time I pull the engine, I will try it.
I thought about buying another carb for like $39, but for $9 more, I can get a whole new engine.

First thing put old carb on the other motor now open HSN 2 turns out from close now get a 12inch fuel line put on the inlet make sure your carb slide is open get some soapy water and a model brush.Put some soapy water around the carb where it goes into the motor put finger over carb opening and blow if you have a leak you will see bubbles and do lSN and around the HSN you might of had a air leak.

yeah but then you won't know if the carb has a air leak. Alot of times it will leak around the HSN or the front bearing but if you do it with the carb off then hold both open ends of carb closed hook up fuel line so you can blow into and put some soapy water around HSN and around the LSN make sure you slide on carb is open when you do it and watch for bubbles then you will find your air leak
