Default First run of two new Tornado BB's! Help!

Hey guys!I've been lurking the forum for quite some time now, and did all of the research Ipossibly could before purchasing two Tornado's...

Before I even had the chance to take them out with the girlfriend, Imade sure to stock up on Nitro, glow plugs, tools, etc...(Hobby shop sold me glow plugs that are TOObig!)

It took over two hours to get my car started, and then the girlfriends was even worse. We a R/Cnut junkie come out to help us, and he got hers started, tuned and working PERFECTLY.

Mine on the other hand was off to a better start, but after running a few tanks, Inoticed that the car kept locking up in place while it was doing it's thing, and then all of a sudden it would let go.Ido believe this is because of the gear mesh being too tight, correct?Idid the paper test before Itook them out, and it was fine. But all signs pointed in that direction.Ialso heard that this is common for some R/C's while they're being broken in. Is this true?

My car ended up flipping a few hundred times due to a dip in the concrete, and Inoticed that all four shocks were toast. The screw piece on the bottom slid all the way down to the bottom of the stock, and the oil just went everywhere.I ended up fixing them one by one, but the car still seems fine. Is this a common thing to happen?

And one more thing before Itake my car back out... The idle screw doesn't seem to do much of anything for me. My car is stuck at a higher idle, and it just wants to take off... I've read so much on this issue, and just thought it would be adjusting the throttle servo, or just using the idle screw to close the carb gap. Well, nothing seems to work. Could the LSN setting have anything to do with this?

Thanks guys!I'm going to take mine out today before the girl comes home, and see if Ican fix these issues... Her's is working 100%, and I'm glad. Better me to have these problems than her!She would have just took them out on me!

First thing to check is the gap at idle. Look into the carb and adjust the gap to about 1mm.

Reset the HSN and LSN to base settings and start over on tuning.
LSN flush with collarand HSN 2-2.5 turns out. Adjust in 1/8 increment turns.

Drive train lock up could be the drive cups have come loose and need to be reseated on the flat side of the shafts. Also apply locktie to the grub screws on the cups.
the cup with the disk brake on it needs to be installed so the cup goes through the disk itself.

as for the idle, check your trim on your remote...or might have to adjust your servo horn...take off your air filter and adjust to a opening of about 1 mm

Agreed.Iwill be getting two hop up kits here soon... For $80 a pop, it's hard to beat.

Iran the car through about five tanks today, and the car did EXCELLENT.I ended up having one of the tops of a shock come off, easy fix, and then the car started getting stuck again.

Seems Igot the idle, low and high speed down. The car sounds and runs beautifully. The only things that is bothering me now, is something having to do with the clutch... Every once in a while it will just stop, and not move.Ican't move the car forwards or backwards, and then all of a sudden it will unstick itself and start driving again... Ihave no idea how to troubleshoot the problem. Do you guys know what the deal could be?

Also, these shocks are pretty decent, but are the upgraded shocks with the yellow spring that much better? The thing acts like a pogo stick!

Well, went out again today, and my pullstart decided to give way...So now she's down until Ican find either a new pullstart, or buy the electric wand. What do you guys suggest?

Otherwise, my girl's ran great today... Gravy.

Yeah, never tugged on it more than 6-8 inches, but Ibelieve that Istressed it when the engine became flooded whenI first got it.When I took the pullstart off, the spring had uncoiled itself inside...I'll just order the electric wand, and hopefully that'll take care of that.

Ijust don't know enough about the clutch with this hobby to determine if it's the problem that is locking my car up...It looks like the clutch bell has burn marks around itself, so perhaps something is wrong inside there. Ihear most people replace that anyway, but I'm unsure of which parts would be the best to put in there...

I'm definately not replacing the engine until the thing decides to crap out on me... Idid order the wand, and it's coming with two backing plates, and all accessories. I'm going to use my existing bearing on the shaft.

I've got the blue loctite, but I'm not using it until Iknow that my gear mesh or clutch isn't going to give me any problems.Itighten most screws before each run.

Ialso ordered the hop-up kit last night to take care of the busted shocks, as well as replacing the rest of the parts. Can't wait to get to work on my baby!

Ithought the wand was a great deal considering it came with two backing plates, and that will take care of both of my Tornado's!

Irecently found out that a hobby shop about 25 minutes away from me carries Redcat Racing parts, including the pullstart for $19.... I'm going to make a trip down there tomorrow to see exactly what they carry!Yay!

Tell me about it!I'm going to take a ride up there with my girl after she gets off work. She's pretty excited to see what they have for our cars too! She's getting into these things WAYtoo much!

Do you guys know if the shocks that come with the hop up kit are better than stock? These Tornado's are like pogo sticks... I have a nitro XTM X-cellerator ANDelectric, and the shocks seem to do a much better job of stabilizing the car after air... Ican't even drop the Tornado a foot from the floor without it bouncing and bottoming out...

Ihope the new shocks fix that, but Ihave yet to find out!

i think the hop up shocks are alum shocks.. and if u want to slow the spring rate down add spacers to the spring to make them stiffer, or drain out all the oil.. and run them dry

They are aluminum, but aren't the stock ones as well?...

My oil has already completely drained out of all four because they fell apart a few times when Ifirst ran the car.It seems to perform exactly like my other Tornado which hasn't had any shock problems...

But if this car bounces around like it's in la-la land,I don't see how spacers will help.Ijust see the car bouncing even more with them.

Can anybody drop their Redcat car from a foot to three feet without it bouncing around and bottoming out?I can see this being a problem on the track, and causing wipeouts like crazy!

Well I must say that I never knew that a hobby shop could carry so many Redcat products... Body's, wheels, and all parts! They had everything!

Only bad thing, is that I picked up a pullstart, and it's TOO BIG! It says it's for .16 & .18's, but on the tag it says 1 1/4. So perhaps for another vehicle I'm not aware of. I thought the Volcano's and Tornado's had the same motor with pullstart...

Guess my car will be down until Friday when my drill start comes in along with my hop-up kit...

Does anybody know what would happen if I contacted Redcat about the bad pullstart and busted shocks, or are none of these covered under the warranty since it wasn't their craftsmanship?

Hope to have these babies running soon with some pics and videos!

Do you just unscrew the bottom part of the shock, fill 'er up and tighten it back down?I've never messed with these shocks before, soI didn't know if it would come loose again, or leak...

Definately sounds like something I'll do with these as soon as Iget my new ones on with the hop-up kit!

Ive got the big bore shocks too and they are amazing, that would actually probably be my first upgrade if i did it again. But hopefully the aluminum ones are good too, i havent tried them but i would rather have the big bores instead of the stock sized. But they should be good. Just take the shocks off by taking the screw off on the arm with a hex wrench, then pop it off the shock tower. Then take the spring off the new shocks, and just unscrew the cap off the top of them. Drain the old stuff out real good and then put the new oil in, make sure you dont overfill, cause there is a bladder in the shock cap that compresses and helpes push the shock back out after compression. I fill it to flush with that, usually so there is no air inside. Because air moves real fast, and with let the shock compress faster than the oil. And try to get all the air bubbles out of the oil, move the shock shaft and let em sit for a bit.
