Hey again, well I just got done with the first stage of motor breakin (idle)and tryin to do stage two.. Im concerned that I have a driveline proplem due to the wheels not turning..Im affraid to rev it more than a 1/4 throttle, but even with the wheels off the ground, (car on the stand) it's not trying to move the wheels?? The clutch bell/pinion hasnt even tried to engage the spur gear, as far as I can tell.. (But the wheels move freely, by hand..The gear mesh is ok.. not too tight) When watching the "how-to" video of the Volcano breakin, it's wheels would move as soon as the idle increased..Mines gonna take alot more revs than that to get it to move..What should I do?Try to rev it up more or break out the wrenches??

It's not the dogbones/cups.. Dont think it's the transmission either..The clutch bell (pinion gear) isnt being engaged for some reason... From looking at the video, it looks like the clutches are supposed to engage the clutch bell when a certain rpm is met.. (they overpower the spring and open up against the bell housing, which drives the pinion gear-spur gear-transmission gears-dog bones- diffs and finally thedriveshafts..)But at 1/4 throttle, they aint engaging??I thought maybe the spring was off or broken, but after watching the video I would be having the opposite problem if that were the case.. Who knows.. I'll tear it down and figure it out tomorrow I guess..

Turn your clutchbell the same way the motor would turn it, when you turn it follow the drivetrian and make sure everthing else is turning, if your gears are turning but the dog bones from the tranny to the front and rear diff arent its either gonna be your one way in the tranny or the grub screws in the drive cups are loose.

If you manaully turn the pinion (clutch bell) the rest of the drive train works just fine.. It's the clutch (or something before that) that's not engaging.. The flywheel spins with the motor rpms though, so the clutch is about the only culprit left I think? Are there any know reasons that'll keep the clutch shoes from engaging the pinion/bell gear housing??

Well, I wish I could tell ya I tore it down and found a loose nut or broken gizmo.. Unfortunately, it turns out that Im just a dope.. I guess I wasnt revving the thing up enough to make it move.. I decided to goose the throttle a bit and it decided to move, so it was just me being stupid, not wanting to over rev it before breakin was complete.. I was able to do the 2nd and 3rd tanks at 1/4 throttle, and she ran pretty good. I have it runnin real fat at the moment, so it's sluggish, but I can tell it's gonna scream once it's broken in and tuned up!Doubt very seriously if Im gonna need that 2nd gear.. I'll probably be swapping it for a single speed actually, since most of my playin is gonna be offroad.. Thanks for all thehelp though! It's great having a site like this to get ideas and bounce stuff off of knowledgable people!!Thanksagain,Mick

Nice glad you got it runnin, you'll love it. I prefer the single speed, the only good thing about the 2 speed to me is the top speed.

Couple questions reguarding the single -vs- 2 speed transmission 1/10 scale nitro buggies..
- Any idea if anyone has tried setting the shift point (on the two speed transmission) so it'll just stay in 1st gear all the time? Seems like 1st gear has pretty decent torque? What's the downside to doing this for offroad racing?
- Does the single speed transmission have a better gear ratio for getting off the line or jumping or something? If so, any idea what the actual differences are in the gear ratios? (Spur gear/pinion gear sizes, etc??)
- What parts are needed to convert a Tornado from single to two speed or from 2 speed to single??
Thanks again for all the help!! </p>

Wade will prolly chime in on how to change a 2spd to a center diff...if I remember right he sells a complete setup that drops right in...
but anyways in my opinion 2 spd on an offroad rc is useless...just another thing to mess with (trying to get it set up right)...but I guess its on how you use the rc...if you run it up and down a street and do very little to no offroading you might like the speed...but on track or like situations by the time u hit 2nd (if you do at all) you would most likely be close to a turn...I know a person that has a 2 truggies....same everything but one is 2spd the other center diff. (1 spd)..he claims if the 2spd is faster it isnt by much, also says the 3 diff is much better suited for offroading

Yea, I dont see ever needing2nd gear, for where I'll be running it.. (Golf course sand traps and such) That'd be cool if Wade (or someone)posted a part # for a"drop in" kit to covert a 2 speed over to single speed!! (Tornado S30)Thanks!

Well, Wade never chimed in, so I just went with the single speed tranny and steel pinion that's a replacement for the "Shockwave" buggy.. Looks like it should drop right in to the Tornado S30.. We shall see!
Not sure when I'll put it in, but I had to order some new dogbones and figured I'd get it all at the same time.. Oh, just an FYI, Kurt at Unlimited ********* is flat out awesome at filling orders and helping hiscustomers who have Redcat Racing products!! (As well as all the other products he sells too, Im sure) But he's been great to do biz with, gettingparts for my Tornado (parts shipped within acouple hrs of ordering)and helping me out with extra little tips and tricks!! Thanks again Kurt, if you read this!!

That one is sold out, but wade has it here, that clutch bell should be the one.
