thanks,

That did show me a few things but what im looking for is how to line the shoes up? There are 2 different ways you can put the shoes on. First does the spring go closer to the back or the front of the shaft? Second take a look at the holes in the pic. do i have the backwards? http://www.vantechworld.com/webimages/car/IMAG1167.jpg

Thanks
jerry

spring is on the back (closer to the engine) but it doesnt matter, i put it on the other way on another car and have no problems either way.

RE: need help with clutch placement

what do you mean exactly when you say clutch gears?? The clutch bell or spur gears or the spring?

I think He( WE) needs to know which holes to use to put the clutch shoes on the flywheel. I was wondering the same thing. I mounted them on the leading part of the shoe. meaning pull the pull start and see which way the flywheel spins, then install the shoes so when the flywheel is spinning the pinned side of the shoe is leading the way and the back can just fly out behind and contact the clutch bell. This maybe wrong but HOPEFULLY someone knows for sure and will post! As soon as my parts arrive I will find out for sure! LOL

I think you're right about that one, baisically the leading edge should be attached to the peg on the flywheel while the trailing edge should be able to spin up and contact the clutch bell. The other way around doesn't make much sense. I'm sure it'll work either way though.

RE: need help with clutch placement

I wonder if it does matter. If you did it the other way it may cause more chatter with the alum on alum. It'd be pushing not dragging or pulling the clutch bell. Maybe a cause for broken springs??? Justa thought.

RE: need help with clutch placement

That's a good point. I know I've had mine the way I described and I've never broken a clutch spring. Hey who knows maybe we're on to something?

RE: need help with clutch placement

Well im not breaking clutch springs, im breaking clutch bells.

Yeah that's what we're saying, If you have it on the wrong way It creates a lot more friction and that could be whats causing your clutch bells to crack and break. It's late now, but maybe tomorrow i'll take a picture for ya.

Well its late here to but i want to show you all what happens.

If anyone has teamspeak www.goteamspeak.com (download) We have a R/C room everyone is invited

i would think the shoes should be pushing not pulling, more friction on pulling meaning more heat meaning broken springs and clutch bells. This sound like a possibility. HMMMMMMMMM:D I think this needs more investigating.

I 've a new Volcano STX coming from chubbysdad. (your nephews thank you for the buggy and can't wait for my truck to come so I quit breaking their car!:D) When this sucker arrives I'm tearing the cluch bell off and seeing how they're installed from china. Iwonder if they do them all the same or just guess. It seems to me that from those pics something very BAD happened inside that bell.[X(] Hopefully someone will know for sure and post an answer. I've only dealt with chainsaw clutchs but the spring holds the shoe(no pins) and they evenly expand to drive the chain bell. Yo Chubbs got an answer?

Yes I got an answer. Buy the hurricane. :) lol

Yeah...someday ... But seriously does anyone know what the proper placement of the clutch shoes on the flywheel pins is???
Oh Josh broke his right wrist today on a bike so I just home @ 11:45. Shoulda been driving the Tornado woulda been home by 8 with maybe another broken A arm instead!!!!!!![X(]

the clutch spring is closer to the engine from the factory.

RE: need help with clutch placement

Wow that's one torn up clutch bell.

Chubbysuncle is right there.. the leading edge should have the pin in it.. As the shaft spins the front side of the shoe should be attached and the following end should swing freely.. Does that make sense?

Also.. What did you do to that poor clutch?!?! ..was a sledge hammer involved?? lol
Good luck with it.

Someone suggested a traxxas 4146x clutch and spring for my stx, but the LHS guy sold me an API (traxxas was out of stock), turned out to be the wrong diameter. Go figure.. I'm goin back to get the 4146x ... um.. now.. latas

RE: need help with clutch placement

4146x, the spring only works, the clutch shoes are too small so i used the traxxas spring with the stock shoes.

The Redcat clutchs have a mounting hole on both ends of each shoe. 4 holes total. You can mount the shoes spring towards the flywheel with either the leading end of the shoe on the pins or the tailing end of the shoe on the pins. Both cases the spring is toward the flywheel. I mounted the shoes on the leading end and have run 3 tanks of fuel thru with no problems. I'm just wondering if they are installed on the tailing end if this is the cause of broken springs, Massive clutch bel failure or maybe gear strippage(?) that seems to be a problem for some people and not others. I realize engine alignment is probably the major cause of stripped gears. I just replaced both gears and the clutch bell on the boys Tornado and have run 2 tanks thru on road and some gravel/dust and a tankful in my dusty semi grass backyard and the gears look new. The manual([:'(]) doesn't give any info on the placement. The 3 shoe clutches and Traxxas clutches seem to only have 1 hole. Are they pinned on the leading side??. If anyone breaks a clutch spring or strips out gears take notes about it. Engine screws tight? What holes are the shoes in and conditions you were running in. Gravel, sand ,dirt ,mud ,ect. Maybe we can find a common cause and fix it and not just blame Redcat.
Go Team!!

RE: need help with clutch placement

Well I got my Volcano today. :D I pulled the engine (btw: from the factory the engine wasn't square to the gears and way too much slop) to check the clutch shoes. The shoes are installed with the pin in the leading hole of the shoe and the spring cloest to the flywheel. In otherwords looking at the engine from the clucth bell side the crank rotates counterclockwise. get the pins in a 12:00 and 6:00 position. With the clutch slices together side by side you will have 2 holeson top @ 11;00 and 1:00 & 2 on the bottom @ 7 and 5. top goes to the 1:00 & bottom goes to the 5:00. If you are stripping gears, Exploding clutch bells and have had the shoes off to change or repair the cltch spring checkout the placement of your shoes;).
OOHH... I ran 2 tankfuls of fuel thru the truck @ idle or just above and could'nt take it any longer. Blipped around the yard slow for 3 more tankfuls. Absolutly NO problems!:D. Starts right up 2 pulls right outta the box. I did blue loctite the engine screws after checking the clutch and setting the gear mesh. Another tank or two and I'll start the abuse. DHL beat the piss outta the box in shipping but luckily did hurt the truck.
