my first spa3d questions
ok guys ive just built my first spad3d and plan on having its first flight on sunday and i have some questions if you dont mind answering
1 will my os 50 max 12.15x3.75 prop be ok as the power.... it also has a throttle pipe??
2 my u channel is 39" instead of 36" everything else is as the plan.. will the affect the plane in anyway??
my auw is 4lb dry cg is 6" from le i had to add 15g of weight to the lefthand wing to counter act the throttle pipe...
i will post some pictures as soon (its nothing flash but i hope to have fun)
thanks miskin

RE: my first spa3d questions
1. That should be more than enough power.
2. Not 100% sure, but I think your tail surfaces will be more effective (If that's possible). Better set the Expo high.
3. Instead of weight, maybe you could just push the 5/32"x18" spar over to the left a couple of inches.

Recheck your balance and make sure you are no more forward than 6"
Reflex your ailerons so they are level with the fuse or slightly up.
Remember theese planes dont like speed, so throttle back once up.
Get ready for uncontrollable laughing.
I think you are going to have alot of fun tomorrow

RE: my first spa3d questions
The MW does'nt have to run theough the fuse, but it does add rigidity to the wing/fuse asssembly. You might try raising your ailerons 3/16-1/4" above fuse centerline as they tend to droop as they run toward the tip. It's ok to try with them level, but if you notice your plane trying to climb when it should be flying level they need to go up more.
Let us know how it flies, pics & flight report

-90 % is ALOT of expo, my only fear with that would that it'll be very gentle for the first bit, then almost snap to full deflection,
I may be wrong, but before you fly it, it mightn't hurt to watch what the surfaces do when you move the stick to full.
if it goes gentle then snaps, I'd turn the expo down a bit.
Have fun with it, that's the main thing
I know my QHOR was a BLAST, except for the 8 - 9 degrees right thrust I accidentally put in [&:]

RE: my first spa3d questions
hi guys
had my first maiden today but it didnt go very well[]
first of i started the engine and while it was on idle the screws to the enging worked loose ..so i replaced them with bolts .... then i was having a bit of fun hovering thought i would practice a landing and bent the undercarage right back so i thought i would just land it ... then just as landed the engine mount broke just in front of the throttle srevo so that was it for the day i had to play with my laser arrow instead...
now i could not find a poly board so i had to use 1/4 ply instead... anyone got any ideas as to what else i could use???

RE: my first spa3d questions
I use 3/4" ply and have not had one break yet despite some full throttle spinner first 'landings'. Its probably overkill though I would think that if you laminated 2 pieces of 1/4" togeather with epoxy to make 1/2" it should work well.

RE: my first spa3d questions
Cutting board really does work much better than plywood. Among other things, it really damps out the engine vibrations. Wood just transfers them right into the fuselage.
Just did a rebuild on mine after finally dirtnapping it too hard. New wing, new engine mount. Even better this time.

RE: my first spa3d questions
miskin,
Next time you make your mount, do'nt make a servo cut-out. Mount your servo with servo tape and a zip-tie. You will have a stronger mount.

RE: my first spa3d questions
Great looking plane!!
Yeah, -90% Expo might be a tad too much.
I found starting at -40 or -50% works okay.
I'm getting where I turn it off while flying
and just use it for take off and landings.
I hate it when I pull back too much on take off.
The plane leaps up and wants to loop back at me!
I don't think having steel spars all the way out
to the wing-tips is doing much for you.
In a hard pull-up, 80% the wing-bending load
is going to be near the fuse.
I can't see much (if any) flex in the last 9 inches of my wings when pulling serious Gees.
Two 18" spars work just fine. I would never consider using three spars
unless the plane was overweight a few pounds
That extra steel is going to add weight to the wing. A wing that is not super-attached to the fuse.
A lighter wing should slow down better in a crash or hard landing in the weeds.
It will have more flex and take the shock better.
But WTHDIK, I'm just a newbie with only one major balsa crash under my belt
Cheers,
