My SPADs and I stop at the carwash. I clean the wife's car while I'm there, really goes a long way in the "relationship" if you know what I mean.

Here's my homemade formula for cleaning planes:

2 OZ of dishwashing liquid
8 OZ ammonia
16 OZ rubbing alcohol
and add tap water to make one gallon.

Works great.

I have had good luck cleaning my engines with aerosol brake cleaner from Auto Zone or NAPA. It leaves no residue. I clean the rest of the planes with Orange clean but I'm not totally satisfied with the film left by the Orange clean.

I felt like I need to add important info. concerning the brake cleaner. It is a strong solvent that evaporates rapidly so use out doors only, don't want anyone to gas themselves. Also keep the carb closed and avoid getting into muffler, if you can't follow with a few drops of after run oil in the carb and exhaust. If you have stubborn varnish build up a tooth brush works good with this stuff, especially around the fins.

I use Windex on my balsa models. Have yet to build a spad.

What club do you fly at? I live in lone oak, and hunt in Symsonia

I'm a member of the Murray Club. My son and I have visited the Paducah club, we may start flying there more this next year as well. Also, I have a 250' X 50' strip in a field across the road from my house that I maintain. I feel sorry for the guys that live in the city where flying area is hard to find. Living in a farming community is great, lots of room.

I agree. It's nice to be able to fly in any of the open fields around my house/little town. The planes do get a lot dirtier, though. Especially at this one field that I fly at a bunch that has a long dirt strip we land on.

I only get to the club field about once a month since it's about 30 minutes away.

I clean my SPADs with the same solution I clean my balsa/Ultracote models with. I mix equal parts of windshield washer fluid with rubbing alcohol. It works great, no streaks or residue. It's cheap! Try it, you won't want to use anything else.

I clean my SPAD's with 1/3 Simple Green, 1/3 isopropyl rubbing alcohol 99%, 1/3 water. Works for me.
