SPA3DT & GMS or Tower .46 NO GO!
Just wanted to give every body a heads up if you are planning on building a SPA3DT with either a GMS .47 or a Tower .46 you are going to run into a problem with the muffler hitting the wing. Tattoo's plans show a TT .46 pro with a short muffler and if you look at the picture on the first page you will plainly see that the wing is directly behind the muffler.
I am thinking of putting the cutting board engine mount on top of the aluminum tube. This will make the muffler clear but will greatly change the thrust line and I'm not real sure that will work.
I have seen pictures with the motor mounted sideways now I know why.

Dude! Put the engine sideways! It is easy to do and the muffler is under the airplane. So is the castor! Works good, lasts a long time...well maybe.

As stated above just mount the motor sideways on the fuse. I did that along with installing a pitts muffler on the pqhor I built and it flies great!

Thanks Guys
I had a really cool set of wire landing gear bent up and installed before I discovered that the muffler was too long. Now I'm not sure whether I should bend up a new set or use some sort of profile landing gear.

I've got a 12" craftsman bandsaw that I bought about 12 years ago now. Originally I got it for some woodworking projects around the house but I seem to be using it for a lot of other things instead.....like SPAD construction.
Captain351:
If you decide to mount your motor sideways you will just need to make your landing gear like the ones used on profile planes. That is if you are using the 1/8" flat aluminum but if you are using the 5/32" music wire for landing gear you will need to get a bit creative with a torch and benchvise to bend it into shape.
Here's a couple pics of my landing gear:

The long wheel bolts are actually used to add a little weight to the front and the locknuts hold it on. I screwed up when I converted the qhor over to a pqhor with a tube fuse (dirtnaped the u-channel and bent it bad). I used the old fuse for a reference as to where the servo's were mounted....which didn't work out to well as far as the balance point with a tube fuse. I actually had to add 2 large hex nuts onto those long axle bolts to get it balanced out decent.
When that picture was taken I was only about half done with construction (notice the throttle servo wire hanging down and no fuel tank) and I didn't have it balanced yet. I know you say why didn't I move the wing back some.....it was already screwed to the fuse and the cutout I made for the ron servo was to far forward so the wing was as far back as it could go without cutting a new servo hole (I'm lazy so that wasn't going to happen). Then out came some hex nuts to offset the out of balance problem I had.
Kind of hard to see in this pic but the hex nuts are installed on the axles

You should zip over to Chris' web site and look at the way he bent his wire landing gear. Easy and simple to install and has the added benifit of being held on with zip ties. The zip ties will brake on those less than perfect landings.

Could you be more specific about where to find a picture of Chris's gear. I'd like to see what he came up with but don't have 2 days to look through all the pictures he has on that site.

Yeah that is a 46LA on the pqhor. I'm currently running either an APC 10x6 or a 10x7 prop on the 46LA. Granted those pitch props are made more for speed vs slow 3d flight but the only reason I built it was because I wanted to try another spad design. I built the pqhor with a tube fuse (after trashing the u-channel fuse on a dirtnap) to mainly just to fool around with (it flies inverted real nice) since I have a spa3dt that I like to hover and harrier around. The spa3dt is powered with an old TT gp.42 with an APC 11x5 prop and hovers pretty well. The 42 doesn't really have enough power (motor is getting tired) to hover a 5 pound plane very long but it will for a short time.
If you are going to build a spa3dt and use the 46la motor I would start with either an 11x4 or 11x5 prop (I like APC props but that's me). The AUW of my spa3dt is right around 5 pounds with a full tank....give or take a few oz's. You should be able to hover no problem with a 46 and a 11x5 prop. If you think you are slightly down on power get yourself a tower hobbies 46 or a gms 47 with the large tuned pipe. Several people here have used them with great success on spads....both the TH and GMS motors are ball bearing motors where as the 46la isn't (the la is a bushing motor).
Hope that helps,

Chris
Thanks for the link. I had already thought of something similar but it's nice to have conformation.
Chunky
I didn't mean to imply that I didn't spend any time looking I looked for about an hour before giving up (I think I saw it and didn't know it). I figured someone would be nice enough to answer me if I asked. I only addressed it to you because you gave me the idea. Thanks by the way.

Awe well that's a totally different story. Just be careful on how you phase your questions. I would have been much more forthcoming with the information if the question would have been worded something to this effect:
I've looked for an hour and I can't find the picture that you mentioned. Could you be more specific about where to find a picture?
You are welcome. Sorry for the harshness.
