You want something that will slow down. Shooting a plane while flying sounds easy, but take my word, it is not. 3 years ago our club did this to raise money. I flew the plane, and out of the 300 or so shots shot at my plane, only 2 hit. This was low slow flyby's less than 40 feet in front of the shooter, and less than 10 feet high.

RE: Spad + paintball = ???
I have been dreaming of this for two years! I was calling the game SPLADBALL.
Glad I am not the only one. I have two 40's around and a ton of coro.
I was thinking of a wing maybe 36" or so. Would be quick and easy to build a few and should make a good target.
I was thinking of the motor and elects to be mounted to a thin piece of ply run the length of the wing to both stiffin it up and be detatchable when the wing gets damaged.. then just screw on a new one. Wieght wo't matter cuz like Deadeye said it needs to go slow anyway. Just has to fly.
THAT'S IT, gonna do it!
Have Fun!

So if i understand correctly if we were to use the same caliber guns we have nothign to worry about if the plane gets bombarded with paintballs and it wont desintagraqte when it gets hit thats good news...

Use a SPA3D and harrier it around 2 to 10 feet off the ground. Nice and slow.... big wing to hit, and if it gets knocked down, just crank it up and go again. Sounds like a hoot!

Nope, tuck the receiver under the wing flap, the servos are on the top where they won't get hit and the battery won't even notice it.
SPAD3D, good idea.

Great idea on putting the receiver under the wing flap for protection. With the other servos in the aluminum frame, they'll be protected by the profile fuselage.

We went to a fun fly last weekend where they did this. The plane's 'fin' ran the length of the fuse to give a better side area to aim at. They also had some club member's pictures pasted on one side for extra incentive. Here is a picture I took during a refueling break:

RE: Spad + paintball = ???
Can you give us some more info? How did the SPAD hold up? How far away were the shooters standing from the plane? What percent of the shots hit the plane?
We're thinking about doing this as a fund raiser for the club at one of our fly-ins. Maybe 3 shots for a $1.........
Thanks,

The plane held up well considering the abuse. They said the hole you can see in the fuse was a paint ball hit. They we getting 5 shots for a buck as a fund raiser for their new field. It was a bit windy which made flying low and slow tricky, but I guess the best passes were made at about 20 to 30 ft away. I do have some video clips made with the same camera, but the best is about 51 megs and I am not into video editing yet.
The club is the Dixie Aeromasters so you might get some more information from them.

I'm not familiar with paint ball guns, so I don't know the difference in size and power. Here is a picture of the one they used:

Thanks! The plane was still going pretty fast.....no doubt it would be easier to hit in a harrier/hover. You could vary the flying style to keep the "hunters" guessing.

There is no paint ball gun that will put a paint ball through the Coroplast. If it did that it would also put it fairly well into your body. I know they hurt, but they aren't lethal.
I've not heard of paintballs ever doing any damage to the model airplanes solid surface. They will go through plastic covering, but not a spad.
Now, when you propel a couple dozen of them with your more than manly spud gun, they will go right through the plastic siding on your house. But that's quite a few more fps than the a paintball gun. I've never had my gun kick as much as it did that day even with potatoes in it. I swear I must have had the PERFECT mix of fuel in the tube.

If there's a local field nearby you should see if they will sponsor the event with some rental guns and CO2- you buy the balls. Throw some free advertizing on your flyers and you're all set.
By the way, there is no difference in the power levels from one paintball gun to the next. They all shoot the same balls around 280 fps. The only difference from one kind to another is speed, feel, noise level, and accuracy.
