Default no spar airfoil Qhor-FF

Planes like the Tattoo's Qhor and Chris's modified Qhor-FF have the sparless airfoil with the fold in the top of the wing. Is there a plane design that uses a similiar airfoil but glides better? Neither plane glides well with no power. Just curious if anyone had tried to engineer something similiar to either plane but with a better glide.

Well, if you were to "finish" the airfoil, that is extend the bottom all the way to the trailing edge, it will glide better. BUT, it will also lose that amazing 3D ability. This is what everyone who has tried this reported. The hovering and harrier capabilities of the J-wing Spads are probably due to the drag, among other things I'm sure, that are induced by this airfoil. The penalty is a crappy glide.

Aparently they also glide better with the CG moved back to about 30-35%MAC the jury is still out on how far back the CG should be on theseJ wings

Thanks guys.

What does 30-35%MAC mean? 30-35 percent from the leading edge?

This is my Qhor-FF flying (the original qhor design modified by Chris).

Love the plane...might try building another and finishing the airfoil to get it to glide just to experiment.

One thing that really helps the glide is to pull the airfoil down as tight as possibe against the channel. The thinner the foil, the better the glide.

Chris,

Do you mean have less of a rise in the fold on top of the plane?

yep. Mine is actually tight against the fuselage now, top and bottom, and the little clips on the end have been shortened to match.

Wow, the plans for the QHOR40 say 1/2" of space and mine is one inch! No wonder it can fly so slow. It's got a load of extra drag.
I'll have to pull the TE back tight and 'put the top down' so to speak.
It might turn into a SPA3D with smaller control surfaces.?.
