The full size Pond Racer showed promise in full scale racing.

Why is it that it was never carried over into model racing?

My guess is that most guys (myself included) would find it too difficult to build. Then there is the fact that it doesn't easily fit into the existing racing classes. The only available racing class that I know of other than a "run what ya brung" type of race where it would "fit in" would be giant scale unlimited. It's not an F1 so you can't race it there, it's not a warbird so you can't enter it in that type of race, in Q-40, twins are not allowed. So the only realistic venue for it is giant scale racing which is cost prohibitive to most people and has but a few contests around the country each year. I could be wrong, and I often am, but I believe that the guys who are going the fastest in Giant Scale are using single engined designs.

The short answer is, it's probably not worth the effort.

Personally, I don't think the Pond showed much promise after the first year, and even that is a stretch.

Just because airplanes do well in a 1:1 version, doesn't equate to them doing good when they are scaled down. This isn't necessarily true for QM-40, which some people argue are scale airplanes. Take Nemesis for example. Jon Sharp ruled every race he flew, but the model at 42% didn't have the right proportions to make it effective. Often times airplanes like Nemesis are built to go in a wide sustained circle. Models go straight, turn tight, go straight, turn tight. Get the picture? Different course, different design.

In other words, some models work well when they are scaled down. The aspect ratio might be good, the frontal area is good, etc etc etc

You may also want to check the RC CAD web site ... I think I saw this one on there as an example of someone's work ... You may be able to download the files ... And you can download a limited version of RC CAD.

The Pond Racer in the pictures is his.

I have scaled 3 views of the pond racer.. i wouldn't go from this drawing.. to hard to guestimate. I once made a 1/20 scale model of the pond racer it's a really kewl ship. It's really to bad that they didn't build another, it really was a fluke it crashed.. carbon monoxide poisoning I believe it was from one of the engines leaked into the cockpit, and it made the pilot pass out, and the ship rolled over and right in.

Here's your answer: wings are too tiny. The full-scale version had a fairly high wing loading with high control stick pressures...........it was said to feel not unlike a jet. High wing loadings don't fair too well in the modeling world and it's the kiss of death for a racer. I'm familiar with the one mentioned and it flew pretty well (but it was designed, built and flown by a VERY skilled modeler). It was fast but it wasn't the quickest ship around the turns. Sure looked cool, though!

This plane would make for a really cool Speed 400 motor sized model with a little extra wing area.

yes, i can not understand no one will race the pond. We are built since 15 years only Racers, the Pond is one of the latest Racers from us. We have the Nemesis in 42% for engines up to 160 ccm the Mong Racer in 50 % for Engine up to 212 ccm and the Pond for Engines up to 2 x 100 ccm. We are planning get the first Jet Racer an L29 Delfin with 228 cm Wingspan for Turbines with 40 pound trust. So you all can see, we only built racers..............

The full scale Pond Racer was JUNK. If you had been around it, you would fully understand why another was never built. There were two main reasons it was slow. First the Nissan engines were being run at power levels they could never tolerate, and the tight packaging made cooling them near impossible. The second was basic aerodynamics, mainly intersection drag. The cause of the crash was an engine fire. They had suffered several fires in that aircraft before as well. The design put the pilot in the center pod away from the engines which was thought to be safer. The problem was the forward swept wing. When the fire started, it burned through a fuel line, and raw fuel followed the leading edge of the wing straight TOWARD the center pod. Another problem was the canopy. It could not be jettisoned in flight. It instead had an explosive rope to blow it clear and allow the pilot to jump. It is thought that Rick decided to try to ride it down instead of setting off explosives in the direct path of a stream of fuel. If he could have jettisoned the canopy, he probably would have been able to jump clear.

might be the original pond was not turning out real good and the engines they take was not the very best choice, what can I tell you, is the pond Racer as an Model with 3 meter Wingspan and 2x 75 ccm power makes a couple meters....
