2015 Fly'n Ash Fast- Now part of SAMS points race
#26
Finished painting; markings; and finally today, clear-coating my new YS 115-powered P-47. Sunday at Redding will be the 10-year anniversary of my maiden flight of the very first P-47 I made. So, in commemoration, I did it in the exact same markings as my very first one. I hope to maiden the new one on Tuesday.
Glad this one is all-wood; and not composite, like the first one. I think it would melt (or at least get soft), otherwise!

Patience . . . Little grasshopper. She's almost done!
(Sorry Jake. Latest pic with paint only - no decals - was on my iPhone. Wife stole the adapter off of my computer for her iPad, so haven't been able to download it. Little busy today getting house and food ready for Jim and rest of family for Father's day. Worst case: I'll take pics on regular camera and post tomorrow.)
Hey, I heard your caller is going (not that he has gotten around to registering yet), so how about you brave the heat and come see her for yourself at Redding?

What a bunch of "ball busters!" Fine . . .
P-47 "Arkansas Traveler", Mk. II, Paint only.
This is it, in rough form, shortly after painting each of the colors. If you look closely at the top of the nose section, you'll see it fell from the hanger when drying and busted the top of the yellow cowl mounting ring. That sucked!
I had to rush it, and it shows . . . but, it is what it is. I'll post more pics after I get a chance to work on it more, tomorrow.

That was the other reason I didn't mind that I couldn't post the pic. I didn't need everyone seeing my messy shop!
So, thanks for the "email it to yourself" tip, Tim. (I hadn't thought of that.)

Just checked the temps for Redding.
Fri: 117
Sat: 115
Sun: 109
It is official. I am out! I am going Salmon fishing instead.
The Anderson crew may want to give the local EMTs a heads up on the event. Outdoors, multiple days, extreme heat, old men, with alcohol in the evenings. There will be a greater chance of pilots going down rather than planes. For the rest of you that are still going, stay safe, hydrated, and stay the hell outta the sun!

Well, I test flew the new Voodoo over the weekend, she flew very well. I am coming and I am bringing 2 planes. If you all want we can avoid the need to actually race and you can just hand me first for Silver now.

So just out of curiosity how far back should we stand from the plane? The rule says this
Scale – models that do not approximately resemble the scale outlines of their full scale counterpart are not
Permitted. One such example would be the Phoenix Models Strega. Pilots should contact the CD with questions
Regarding acceptable aircraft prior to the event.
Personally I like this form of racing because they look real at least the outline I do not expect it to be a scale event but a scoop should look like a scoop not a fairing.

Not too terrible temp wise. 45 pilots, pretty even spread between the classes. Low number of crashes. I havent looked at the results for each class so I really cant give standings other then JR is sitting in third gold and I am closer to the bottom. I got stung by a wasp in the morning between the pain in my elbow and shoulder and a double dose of benadryl putting me in a fog I was not flying well at all

Well speedracer it has bin awhile due to family circumstances but I am building a couple of new planes and the KI-61 that I built has not missed a race and other aircraft that I am involved with are racing as well. I still help some people and stay involved as much as I can hopefully I will be at the next race.I realize that my opinion is just that mine but I really do not see the problem with asking a question or stating an opinion.

Jason, nothing wrong with an opinion. Please take this for what it is worth as it is only my opinion. When something is said to the race organization that requires a reply then I feel it is elevated above an opinion. The goals of the organizers of the series has to decide what is on the best interest of the group as a whole. Not an easy task. In this case from my point of veiw is that the series participants as a whole is driving the evolution of the airplanes. The organization cant start making judgements to as what shape this or that is in comparison to scale with the loose worded criteria stated in the rules as they are written now. IMO it would become a messy can of worms. Today its scoops, tomorrow its clear windows, the next day its wheel diameter. You can see how it could quickly get out of hand. Most of the airplanes being flown in gold have liberties taken when it comes to scale outline including mine. If the majority wanted more scale appearance then that is what we would have. Then again does it matter? Did adding a scoop to my Macchi make it slower? No. Your KI design with a more scale outline took second place. Again all opinion on my part. I do hope to see you at a race soon.

I see where you are coming from and since you mentioned it I simply asked the opinion of JR at no time did I ever say the word protest or anything like that I asked the opinion of a CD witch is what the rules says to do when you have a question about something and what I am after is just exactly what you are saying where do you stop? Where is the line between legal and not? With the wording of approximately resemble the scale outlines it is absolutely open to interoperation and I am going to now push a lot further with the lines of a KI-61 and a mustang in order to gain every advantage that I can for upcoming all out racing events and or speed passes but I will not push it to where they look like a Q-40 airplane I just do not believe that is the intension of the rule and as you and I have both said its just an opinion and I do respect your's as I hope you will mine. I do hope you are feeling better and I am looking forward to seeing you at the next event.

Hi Guys and Gals, Well we got home last night at 9 PM to a much cooler town. I would like to personally thank each and every person involved with the running of the "Fly'n Ash Fast" Race. THANK YOU!!!! You guys are awesome. It's hard enough to fly these planes with great weather conditions let alone 105+ deg temps. We all got through it OK and drank gallons of water. The competition was very tough in the Gold class this year as it seemed guys brought there "A" Game. I'm not exactly sure what that place has against me but every time I show up my retracts decide NOT to work and give me fits. I was very proud of my long time friend JR seeing him race gold with his very own scratch built P-39. IT WAS AWESOME combined with the top notch flying he produces, He will be a tough draw in Gold.
Also I was very happy to see my Bud Steve Stokes get his first ever SAM Warbird Win in the Bronze class. It was our intention to fly Silver but after testing at the SAM field we decided the little YS-70 was better off slowing down and running Bronze and it sure paid off!
If you have never attended the Fly'n Ash Fast Race I really suggest you go. The people are great and just like the SAM people they Really care. Really sorry to see Tim "Bushman" and Jimmy "Skids" loose planes. Sorry Guys.
