Well after 40 years, I actually completed a Rivets racer that my father started in 1967. The kit was from K & K Fibreglass, My dad had secured the fuselage halves, installed the firewall, sheeted the wings and then stopped. I remember it sitting in the basement for years until I inherited all his old R/C stuff around 20 years ago. I had been out of the hobby for the last 25 years and just got back into it in February. I decided to tackle this project so away I went and it wasn't long before I discovered why he shelved it. He had sheeted and joined the wing halves but forgot to install the control rods. back in those days of course dual aileron servos were unheard of. I was able to bore some holes in the foam to run servo wires and problem solved. All I had was the fuse, wing, wheel pants and plans. I decided that the "T"-tail was beyond my skills so proceeded to design and install a conventional tail. Painted it black and yellow with #20 on the tail since I remember that that was my dads original plan. I stuck an old Webra .61 on it even though the plans say it's a .40 size. I've had to leave the wheel pants off as our grass feild wouldn't accept them. Since I went with wing mounted aileron servos, I also modified it to have full span ailerons. I have 4 flights on it and just love it. It has very quick and responsive controls and sets up nice for landing, but doesn't like to slow down. I wont be doing any racing just sport flying.
Any one have a Rivets unmodified that i could see a picture of?

Actually, that was the method used in building those old F1 airplanes. You sheet the cores, join them, sand it out and glass it first. Then you cut out the ailerons, and cut into the bottom of the wing for the torque rods, and hinge the ailerons. After that, one would glass the center section and finish out with a second resin coat and wet sanding......days later.

If I remember correctly, K&K was down in Sunnyvale, Ca. The Rivits was one of the earliest glass kits, and was somewhat derived from the wood Rivits that Joe Foster won the Nat's with around 1967. Foster's Rivits design was featured in Flying Models magazine in 1967 as well.

Rog,
That looks like a lot of fun. It would be interesting to make a screaming electric park flyer out of it. Any idea on if it's a kit or was it scratch built.

Where did my camera go[X(]? I am currently building ROG's short kit and will post a few pics soon. I have the wing done and the fuse started.
I saw the plane in his pic fly and it was 110% cool hence my wanting/building one. Bob HH is the culprit of the model in the pic BTW.

da50ex, I think this will be my first post on here.... hmmm. Hi I have been looking for a site that would have some information on this kit for a about two years now (on and off ). I need some help with mine. The previouse owner started the kit by securing both halves of the fuselage. For some reason he never finished the kit, and he had sitting in his workshop for quite some time. I decided to take it off his hands and try to finish it myself.... HAHA. It sat in my room for a while before I really started working on it.

The first thing I did, find some power that would pull this thing around nicely. I found a YS 61r on this site and matched it up with the APC 10x10 and 10x9 and macs tuned pipe (we are running 0% nitro here, and we mange to get 13,000 rpms plus, and pipe is not yet tuned)... I also thought it would be cool to design some new wings for this plane (I saw photos of the full scale), and I think thats going well. BUT, the problem I am having is, the lack of the original plans and basic layout for fuselage (it is very hard to find anything in Jamaica relating to this hobby). I am hoping it will be possible for you to share photo detail of your plans (especially the wing foils) with me. I really want to finish this model.

Did your kit have the plans in it? If not you might also look in the 1/2a forum where several of us build smaller planes.

hi Vicman... Thank you so much for your quick reply. To answer your question... no, unfortunately I did not get the plans with the Fuse :)... The poor guy could not find anything in that old workshop of his. so I told him I would try my best to work things out with My flying body, which didn't not happen at all.

I will however take your advice and take a look at the 1/2a forum... Are the layouts there close to the K&K kit da50ex built (not to be too picky)? I will still appreciate anyone out there with some building pics or references and plans that would help me on my build.

Yes Sir RIVETS still racing I made mine from Flying Model Plan ist come to 46 inches wing span and convert to électric with a Astro 25 brushless with 14cells 3300 GP batteries and turn 13X10 APC prop, verry nice machine in the air tract strait and solid but need a good speed in the approche , good ground handling, and verry fast and I have this Bill Falck Rivets since 2005 and let go racing................Jean

Do you have a group to race that plane with??
It looks great by the way.
This is my 1/2a version. I've come in second twice with it at our annual reedie race and it was recently featured int RC Model Wold magazine. The plane makes for a very good racer.

Any one know of just how many different designs of tail groups the Rivets took on?

I got a very poor plan of a low mounted Hoz-stab on a Rivets by Jerry Nelson. He says the original plan was erased and a newer High mounted Hoz-stab was then used. It worked better too.

There were other alterations he mentioned before the whole thing was scrapped as obsolete.

Bill,
Hopefully you can tell in this scan that there were indeed two tail versions. The regular (1948) was changed to the well known T-tail.

As a finn I appreciate all RIVETS models a lot. Bill Falk had first prone posotion in his Rivets..later much modified had a T-tail. AFAIK.

Is there 1/12 scale air racing around ?

There my new racer Howard DGA-4 IKe" power electric Hacker motor A50 14L with 2 packs of 14.8 v 5000mah and 18X10 prop , fly scale and keep the speed on for land.

There a fews profiles color pictures of the RIVETS ,also yo could see the real racer in the Model Airplane News in the section of the Midget Race plane in page 40 in september issue 1990
