I do not know of a supplier in your area. When I was looking for bulk foam in my area I asked the local Home Depot who supplied them. I was directed to the manufacturer. Fortunately it was local. I had to buy a minimum quantity. It was 2' x 4' x 8'. I could have it cut any way I liked. I think the min quantity was as much a min. dollar figure as much as a material amount.

P.S. I purchased it in Kitchener, Ontario. About a four hour drive for you if you get really, really desperate.

Default Foam

Hobby dealers take note....

Many of us have a need for foam in thicknesses greater than two inches. Why not carry this in inventory, and become the "Tower Modeling" of foam?

If you use foam to make LARGE wings, or to make plugs, as I often do, you don't want to glue 2-inch sheets together. It'd be great if we could get a nice source for different types of foam, and thicknesses up to a foot or more.

I like the pink (6 lb density) foam for plugs, but often have a hard time finding it.

I don't know where "Little Valley" is, but you can get 1 pound EPS (Styrofoam) in any thickness from Thermal Foams of Syracuse.

They make it in billets 4 by 8 feet, and slice any thickness you want.
I once asked what the maximum thickness was that they could cut, and the answer was "about 24 feet" !!!

Check the Yellow Pages...

Default Styrofoam

I have gotten foam in as large a sheet as 24" X 48" X 96".
Check with insulation companies in your area. They may not stock it but they can get it if you order enough.
The guy I get mine from adds my order to others he gets and when he has enough for a load he places the order and we get the foam. (within a few weeks in most cases)

Good luck

Default FOAM WEIGHTS

Hi,

What is the ideal foam weight to make wing cores?

Probably it wont be difficult here to get in various sizes and weights.

Thanks

I think I have seen adds for foam wing cores made to your template. I don't know if this is of any interest to you but if it is I'll look at some back issues and see if I can find it.

Default Styrofoam

The February issue of AMA had a building article by Dick Sarpolus. It was for an 80" foam wing plane called the "All American" In the article he gives the numbers for two places that cut foam wings. I will look up the numbers and post them.

Default Ideal Foam Weight

The ideal foam weight is zero.

The density of the foam should be as light as possible consistent with the structural function of the foam. The type of Styrofoam needed depends on the type of structure used to provide strength to carry the bending and other loads of the wing. For low aspect ratio wings with thick airfoils and wood skins, beaded foam of one pound per cubic foot density is probably strong enough. In a stressed skin structure, the foam takes the shear loads and resists the buckling forces from the compression side skin. As the aspect ratio increases and the airfoil thickness decreases, either a spar structure must be added or closed cell foam of two or more pounds per cubic foot density must be employed with carbon fiber skins to achieve sufficient strength and stiffness in a stressed skin structure.

Because the size, shape and load carrying requirements vary over a large range and the possible structural types abound, there is no single best choice of foam. The best thing to do is to engineer the structure to know which foam best fits the application.
