Mike:

It was, I think, RCM that supplied a conversion plan for Fowler flaps on their P-38. If yiu get that it will show you all the hinges and linkages, answer all your questions.

There was also an article in one of the rags about this.

Plan might have been MAN, but I really think it was RCM.

Bill.

It looks like you have a workable design for a slotted flap, but I don't see the rearward movement in your mechanism that would make it a Fowler flap. Those are a bit trickier.

The system I once saw had two unequal links. The lower pivot was fixed, and the upper two pivots hooked to an arm such as yours. The arm then was pushed and pulled which created the rotation down and to the rear. This made the trailing edge for the flap extend just a bit beyond the trailing edge for the remainder of the wing.

You might want to study the specific airplane you are trying to copy. For example the fowler flap on a Boeing 747 slides on a track and the flap then has a upper and aft section that hinges down from the main section to create three separate pieces, very complex.

The flower flap on a Beech starship slides on two tracks, first giving the rear movement and then adding in angle for landing.

However it's done fowler flaps are different from airplane to airplane.

Good luck,
Fred Cronenwett
