RE: Foam Strikemaster
Strykaas ... was thinking about that..but.. being not sure at all how the mod will work went with the same angle as the stock stab as measured from the old stab outline in the fuse.
I am able to get 1" of deflection on the elevator up/down but reduced the throws for 3/4" and mixed in 30% expo for the first test flight and like all flights will have to work from the first one to re adjust. The Strikemaster is so stable that if there are any adverse effects with this mod that it should be manageable to fly until its worked out. ..... ( ...glup,,,, famous last words )

RE: Foam Strikemaster
You can tell that winter is getting to be long ..... I put some black strips on the wing top and re adjusted the muffler up a 1/2" for something to do
I even jacked up the mains and changed out the wheels as the old rims I had on there had elongated and were starting to wobble.
anyone have kit for me to build? LOL
cheers

RE: Uh oh, now what?
Does anyone have a NACA # for the airfoil or know what the closest match for it is?
My foam-cutting skills seem to be the total pits and I've found a local modeller what has a CNC foam cutter.
Initial step will be to do the wing cores for a stock balsa construction. However, if the cost doesn't go astronomical, I might go for a all-foam fusleage and build another one.
This is pushing my memory cells, but my first (and probably only) Midwest kit was an Attacker (all-foam version of the Strikemaster, intended for .19-.29 engines.)
I wussed out and traded it to a friend, who promptly mounted a piped .45 in it.
I'm going to go with an electric version (AXI 2826-10 with 11-inch prop and 4s 4400 polyquest lipoly pack.)

RE: Uh oh, now what?
I have no idea what the airfoil is. It's fully symmetrical so you could just cut a NACA 00 and make it as thick as you want (0012, 0015, etc)
The Attacker came out after the original Strikemaster. It was designed for 19-29 size and, like your friend, I put an Enya .45 in mine (non-piped)...It was pretty hot. I still have one NIB in storage, it'll be fun to build it with the hotter engines available today. I'll have to reinforce and glass the wing obviously (strapping tape won't cut it)
The electric version sounds cool.
If you want a Strikemaster wing (for a template), they are available here: http://www.dbalsa.com/foam_wings/alphabetical.htm and then click "S"
Strikemaster Price: $23.99 Part #: "W1300"
Span: 54 in. Area: 459 sq. in. Style: Symmetrical. Pieces: 2 Pieces LE: W. TE: W. Manuf: Midwest
RC: 9.75 in. TC: 7 in. Taper: 3 in. RT: 2.1875 in. TT: 1.6875 in.

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Well the "T" tail works ... i had a chance between 20 mph cross winds to get a 6 minute flight with two take offs and two landings ... The first ALMOST got me on take off ... with the elevator and stab set at 0 I did what I was thinking going to be a long roll out but at half the length the nose on the SSM went UP and i had to jump on the down elevator fast ... I held it over till i got some hight and had to trim in 23 clicks of down for level flight YIKES ... looks like I should have put in 2 degrees of Plus on the stab ... BUT... hey it did fly well no bad habits to be seen on the short flight ... I dropped it down for a landing all went fine .... taxied back for another take off and this time was more predicable for lift off ...another couple of circuits and landed again.
i have C/G set a the rear limits so going to move it ahead to the forward limit and re trim the elevator again ...this should bring the trim back up a lot from the 23 clicks i have in there now.
Sorry NO pics at this time as I was the only one at the field in the morning ( I do have a pic of it sitting on the bench ..will post later) We have our spring fun fly on the 20 of this month so will hope to get some vid of the flights will post.
Cheers

RE: Foam Strikemaster
I knew it would work but sorry to hear that it made your knees shake...hehehehe
Did you move the CG after the change but before first flight or was it the same as with the V-Tail?
Sounds like it all went well after the initial scare. Do you still have good elevator authority in flare?
Sounds like I may still go with that T-tail on the twin...heheheeh

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Nope it was the same C/G as the V tail ( and was a bit touchy on the elevator at that location ) so will move it forward 1/4" to see what happens ...can always use more nose down then tail heavy ... Yep good authority in the flare and i only have it set for 3/4" throw and can go to 1" if need be ...
cheers

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Thanks Bob ! ... I did a re balance last night I found I was WAAAAAY out Baaaah ... so it looks like for sure I was tail heavy hence the need for so much trim ... to to be on the safe side and with a more realistic balance I will still keep about 8 clicks of down for the next knee knocking take off

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Second round of test flights with the c/g moved to 6 1/4 and 8 clicks of down to start...... .... Wish I could say that I Had to trim up but no I had to click another 2 down for hands off for total of 10 ... so the good news is i gained back 12 clicks with the right c/g.
Being I do not have a incidence meter I have had to eye ball and use a tape measure when I set both the wing and stab ..it could be that the stab has a 1 or 2 deg down built in ..... But hey what the heck I was only trying to prove out the "T" tail would work ... and boy does it ever.
I have not tested to see if the main wing will blank out the stab ( other then the first flight which had high AOA on take off ) but will try it and other maneuver's this weekend ( I was only able to get in 2 more flights in the evening )
Cheers till then

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Well fall is coming on strong and it is just about time to put skis on the SSM I have had a good summers flying ( about 2.5 gallons ) on the SSM trying just about every maneuver in the book and some that are not in there ( dumb thumb high stress maneuver's ) and the "T" tail is still on there with no signs of it coming off .....Mind you I did have one half of the stab come off the Duellist 2/60 that I have but that is another story.
Not sure ...YET ... what i will do for a mod on the SSM this winter but will come up with something,
cheers
PS: the Cutlass did maiden and is still flying as well
Don! do you want to sell/part with a Patriot XL! lol
