NEW SHEETING MATERIAL
Hi guys,
I came across something at my local build supply store. I found very light 1/16th
Luan. It is very flexible and smooth. I'm going to try it on a couple wing cores and weigh it vs. a same size sheet of balsa.
Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this and possibly tried it. It's extremely cheap at my store......5 4x8 sheets for $15.00!!!!!

RE: NEW SHEETING MATERIAL
It is wood. Luan plywood...but very very lightweight. My concerns would be how would plastic covering adhere to it and sitting out in the sun how wouyld it hold up..........

Yah, if I recall correctly it's the stuff that covers hollow wooden doors.
My Lanier ΒΌ Scale Laser has sides cut from something that looks a lot like Luan. I seem to recall discussion in these threads a couple years ago on the use of it for structural items. My Ultracote sticks pretty well to the Laser.
Good luck,
Dave Olson

I don't think you'd want to use this stuff for any structural items!! It's way too flexible.
I'm going to get some this week and I'll post pictures. I also want to weigh a
48"X16" sheet versus the same balsa sized sheet. If indeed this will work for sheeting how
nice would that be for wings seeing you get a 4x8 ft sheet. No more gluing up individual sheets.
Also I dont think it's multi layered...I'll have to look more closely at it.

Tom,
what store did you find these sheets in? If it doesn't work well for wing skins, it may have other applications, the price sure is attractive enough to give it a shot.

RE: NEW SHEETING MATERIAL
I hate to burst the bubble here, but there is no way 1/16" plywood of any type (even if it were contest balsa plywood) will be as light as contest balsa. It will probably be a little easier to finish, but it will weigh more than a contest balsa skin.
