I heard back from my cutter and he indicated that there were no problems with the cut. Great news mod, your method is valid. No double cutting and the break tabs were great. So paf, I don't know what to tell you? I think maybe opening the file in ACad might have something to do with it?

Cheers,

John
That's interesting. What software does you cutter use ? It seems to interpret the "line font" into actual on/off/on cut line, which is great !

Mods - with the sectional view, you shoudn't have ANY double lines (unless you butt two parts together). Where exactly are you getting the double lines ?

My wings are swept back at a high angle. So even in the sectional view there is still a few leftovers.

Hey Paf,

Forgot to ask my cutter what system he is using. I don't know that it matters because I can import the DWG into autocad without any double lines. There is the odd one lurking about from parts that were built on an angle to the xyz planes.

I sent the complete cutsheet templates to my cutter last week and am still waiting to hear back on their viability. I don't anticipate any problems.

In the meantime, I kept myself busy by creating a mini funtana sized version of the Yak. Wingspan is 37" an fuse is 36". It is designed to use a gearboxed Himax 4200 or higher. I may just get this cut along with the big bird!

Cheers,

John

hello SydDythers

You are genius, the yak looks awesome, really cool pics, i would love to design a model in solid works, how long did it take you to get use to the software, is it easy to use, i mean user friendly. I need your advice regarding the software, i design my models 2D in cad, but now i think to use a 3D software for designing, is solid works is easy to go for.

Harry.

That looks sweet! I sent my dwg files to the cutter and they're supposed to be here on Tuesday.

That's cool Mods, can't wait to see it. I'm waiting on my cutter for a quote....hopefully Monday.

HighFly,

Well, I first taught myself Autocad and designed the first Yak in it before realizing that it is pretty crappy for that type of design work. Autocad has since added lofting in the 2007 version but who knows how well it works? Solidworks has a huge tutorial library built into the software which is what I used to learn it. 3D cad work versus 2D cad work are two really different beasts and going from 2D to 3D can be hard to wrap your head around at first. I'm pretty good at learning on the PC and I felt rather dumb when I first started using solidworks. But after a while things started to seep in. Another good resource I have found, oddly enough, is youtube.com They have a bunch of video tutorials on there for different things. Just search for solidworks on that site to see it in action. I would definitely encourage you to use Solidworks/Rhino/Solid Edge or some other 3D software. It is amazing to see the whole airplane in a 360 degree orbit and find bugs in the design before you cut it.

One thing you should be aware of is that you need a really high end PC to use some of these programs. My system, recently updated, consists of a Core2Duo 6400, ATI FireGL 7350 OpenGL graphics card (top of the line ~$2,500 card), 2GB of 667Mhz DDR2 ram and high spped hard drives. Even then, my system gets bogged down at some stage. That is why I tend to break up the design work into separate files. First I do a loft of the entire airplane and then export the fuse, wing, rudder and elevator into different parts files and work on each separately. That way, you minimize the number of parts in a given file and your PC doesn't sweat too much. So, there is an investment in hardware that goes along with 3D cad programs.

I should mention that the FireGL 7350 card is actually a ATI Radeon 1900XT card I paid $300 for that I modded into a workstation card in about 5 minutes. Most people do not realize that ATI uses identical chips in both lines...ATI adds a couple resistors on the GL boards to identify them as such. A modification to the card's drivers allows you to trick the Radeon into thinking it is an OpenGL card. I've benchmarked using specviewperf 9 and saw my solidworks score almost quadruple using this method!

Cheers,

John

Hi Syd
I'm repairing my crashed Yak 54 (smaller version) and need to know some parts of fuselage. Therefore I'm searching for plans of Yak, here I found You have some plans made.
Could I somehow obtain Your plans, even to pay for them. Perhaps it would suffice only parts of plans with fuselage drawing. Thank You for any answer.

Regards

Hello SydDythers

Your work is fantastic and the plane looks great. I´m anxious to make one myself exactly the same. I have a lasercut machine, Is there any chance that you could send me the plans so that i can cut it on the machine. Thank you
best regards Silo

Silo,

These plans are meant to be laser cut and I'd be happy to send them when I hear back from my cutter (we had a few proplems with the dxf file) and he gives the green light. We can do a build thread together when I get the wood. You'll need to build it along with me or you will probably have very little clue on how it all fits together. Also keep in mind that this plane is somewhat different than my first design. The fuse is a bit shorter and the wing's airfoil is thinner. Thus, I can't say exactly how well it will fly until I fly it! Oh, I should ask you what size wood you can cut with your laser cutter? My dxf has cut sheets laid out in 48"x24" ply and 4"x30" balsa

Lospalos,

I don't think I can really help you unless you built the entire airplane. If you built just the fuse, you could probably cut out your own wingtube and anti rotation pin holes but the side formers are set up to take the wing I've designed. Therefore I think it would be pretty ugly.

Hey Silo,

Do you still want the cutsheets? If so shoot me a pm with your email.

I got the green light from my cutter on the design earlier today so I am having it cut! Notably, the design is waaaay cheaper than the original, by about 25%....I was quite stoked to hear that! I am using the same amount of wood but cut down on the laser time and avoided using the more expensive ply thicknesses. If ppl are cost conscious, this is actually quite a viable project now, relative to the arfs. Ready to fly (excluding radio and electronics of course), I think you could come in around US$450 to $500 with canopy, carbon fiber gear and cf wing tube included. This compares to around $630 for the BME Yak. For me, I am recycling everything from my last Yak, which in turn was pretty much recylcled from other airplane so my costs are way cheaper.

The hard part is over...building and flying is the fun part (although the sadist in me enjoys the design work too hehe).

Any word on yours yet Mods?

Cheers,

John

I got mine back too and managed to cut the price down by 25% (3/32in ply is expensive!). Might even cut it down more once testing is complete with the prototype. I will definitely miss the design phase though [sm=cry_smile.gif].

Thought I'd show you guys that are interested a preview of my next design. Any guesses as to what bipe this is? I am quite excited about this design. The full scale version has a very square design which lends itself quite well to our smaller models. The screens show everything exactly as the are on the three views except incidences and airfoil choice. I may drop the elevator some but other than that it is pretty darn scale. Only problem is the full scale prototype still isn't finished and hasn't flown yet (hint hint) so no IMAC I'm afraid ! I read through BBT's thread on his superb Pitts M12 and was worried about having to use a three bladed prop instead of 2 blades due to ground clearance. Fortunately, it appears a 22" 2 blade has more than enough clearance. Also, a DA50 should fit entirely inside the cowl (well maybe spark plug will protrude.) I'll probably start a new thread for this one in this forum soon. Specs will be 65" fuse, 65" wings, 1755 square inches wing area, and hopefuly 15lbs or so. The thing will hopefully be a 3D monster.

I must say it has been great to see everyone's projects in this thread. Despite the topic specific title, it has really morphed into a "you can CAD too!" type thread. I personally benefited greatly from everyone's input. Thanks!

Cheers,

John

Oh, I forgot to mention that if we can get 10 guys together that want to have a shortkit cut for them I think we could do a group deal at around US$200 per short kit + shipping give or take. Keep in mind that there could be a couple minor bugs in the design (hope not but you never know until you complete the build). You should add probably $40 to $50 for stringers and sheeting I'm guessing. After that, you need a 1.25 O.D. by 36 to 37.75 length wingtube and 30% Yak 54 gear from graptech or tnt. Also, the design takes a BME Yak 54 canopy. For a few extra bucks I can add canopy formers for those that wanted to make their own plugs for a canopy (I'd probably make this an optional add-on to save people money that don't want it.

PM me if interested. If I can get 10 confirmed, I'll go ahead and get them cut along with mine. I'd have to ask for the money to be sent thru paypal first and I will forward it onto my cutter...it would be a shame to get stuck with a bunch of wood from guys that backed out. I guess I would need to create a pdf of the plans for you to go and get them printed out. The fuse is self assembling so you don't really need that in the plans though.

Cheers,

John

LOL! Since the thread is morphing...here's my next project. Wingspan will be 112'' with (2) 0.61 sized pusher engines.

Wow [sm=what_smile.gif]. Check out [link=http://www.nationalbalsa.com/]National Balsa Co.[/link]. Their pricing is very reasonable and you could cut that cost considerably.

That looks like quite the undertaking!

You're right on the balsa but I wanted to be relatively conservative with the pricing so when ppl actually go to build it they will hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

Not really. I've already done quite a bit of research for it and have got the design 90% done in my mind. Now I have to put it in CAD so everyone else can see it .

Hi SydDythers,

i hope everything is going well with your work. My laser cutter cuts wood 80x40 cm but no problem bacause i can cut the pieces in half. I would be very grateful if you could send the plans to me my email is [email protected] or [email protected]

Thank you Silo

All that previous interest but nobody Pm'd me yet...

Well how's this to whet your whistle? I found out the price the cutter quoted me was about $20 too high because I mislabeled some wood so it looks like we can get this done for about $180 per kit. I am hopefully getting my wood back from the cutter tomorrow or Monday so I'll start a build tutorial shortly thereafter.

My Pitts M14 is progressing, the fuse is pretty much done. The wings shouldn't take very long at all...both are straight.

Cheers,

John
