Default Newbe scratch builder help

I need a book or web site to help me build my 64" wing P51D. I have a OS 91 surpas II motor, wheels, landing gear,, plans, but the plans do not tell me what type of wood to use where ? I can build anything, but I need to know what I need in wood and where it goes. I also need to match up my motor to a four or three blade prop. Can anyone help me out ?? thanks Pappy[&o]

I can only make suggestions based on the three kits I have experience with

Plywood: Firewall, Fuselage Doublers, Formers, Wing Joiners, Servo Trays

Basswood: Main wing spars, servo mounting rails, landing gear blocks

Hardwood (like Maple): Wing bolt blocks, landing gear blocks

Balsa: Everything else

There are always exceptions. My 40 size Corsair uses "hard balsa" wing spars. If you list whose plans you have, maybe someone has built the same plane and can offer first-hand info and lessons learned.

Hey all, thanks for the info. It will give me a start. Has anyone ever built one out of aluminium ? That would be fun. Not sure about the weight with my motor. I will check on the plan maker and get back with you. Thanks

Yes some one did build a P51 mustang out of aluminium. I think it was the late 80's or very early 90's some one built a 1/4 or 1/3 scale D model completely out of aluminium. I remember reading about it in a scale master write up. It was silver with red. An impreseive amout of work.

Yes I remember that all metal P-51, it was in the mid 1980's like '86 or '87. The guy who was doing it sold kits like the tail plane, left wing etc., etc. However, it was a work in progress and he took a lot of money in pre-orders from people and then guess what? He skipped town with the loot. Either that or he was kidnapped by aliens or some such crap because he was a much sought after individual.

This is not in reply to the post listed, it's in reply to the one above it.
