Well today was CLEAN the whole shop day
I knew I had an large order coming in today and in that order was my new
11x7 props and TruTurn prop nuts.
And since I'll be having a visitor from down under coming in a few weeks It seemed to be the right thing to do.
So since I was doing all of that I thought I would put on the
wings, cowlings, props & prop nuts and see how this baby was looking.
This is the first time I've put them on at all and they look spot on there a few spots I'll have to address but for the most part she's looking smooth true and lean.
I'm bunched in the corners to take most of the shots i don't know how I'll ever get photos of the whole VB-138 w/ a wing span 2 1/2 feet longer and 8 foot fuse.
That's what the box of wood is mostly for and more on the way and a bit more to order.
Have a look,
Bruce

While I had the wing together I wanted to get the wing bolts figured out, The 3/16 x 32 cap head bolt will slide into a plastic tube and thread into a T-nut on a slight angle. the locator dowel, Alum tube, carbon fiber tube will keep everything lined up. Here's the start of side one have a look.

Okay the other day I was cutting w/ the new saw and the miter gauge that came w/ the saw and it is dangerous.
SO like I said I need to make a nice miter box, guard & push stick!!
So that's how I started off this morning.
Then I went back to the wing bolts and aft part of the center section of the wing, the first side still needs some tweeking but it's close, then I'll move on to side two.

Well the slow boat from China arrived today my order from Hobby King
came only 12 days not to bad for our USPS I've had a real bad time here w/ them
in the past month or so. I sold one of my custom Traxxas Revo Race Cars
on eBay and made the mistake of shipping it parcel post my customer never got the package and it's still some where in postal limbo.!!
Live and learn I guess So now another lesson learned I ordered Some BlueBird 620MG Servos I've been reading about them and thought I would try some.
The only reason for getting them was to make the order for my Turnigy LED lighting systems worth the shipping charge, the lights look alright out of the box but I let you know in the next few week once I hook them up.
The servos however right out of the box one runs smooth and seems fine the other is not smooth and gitters when just sitting,so I had to take it apart and look at it.
So I now have some MG TORPEDO release servos for the PBY it's the only thing I'll trust w/ these servos
on this model.
I'm still working on side two of the wing bolts mostly been surfing the net and playing around today.

Okay I've still been working on the center section of the wing, I've now installed
the second wing bolt.
And I have been blending the three wing sections w/ Bondo this covers the raw ply edges some of you may have been wondering about this, the skin was about 1/32"
higher than the ply. The first side is finished the second side needs another light coat.
So then I added the rib caps and started on the TE piece and
right off I noticed there was a problem the under side of the center section
had become bowed
It wasn't bad but it was there
So to fix this I had to free the bottom skin from the center four ribs line up the TE w/ the bottom of both wing tip sections using two 36" sanding blocks and reglue the ribs w/ thick CA & PRO CA Activator.
Now I have to sand everything flush do a few touch ups.
Then I'll make the center hatch it's quite a large hatch so I think I'll have some small 1/8 ply ribs on it so it keeps that curve.
After that I'll start to install the USB ports in the wing ends so I will be ready to work on the wiring of the servos and the lighting.
I need to find out if there's some one making any 1/10th - 1/12th scale torpedoes out of ABS plastic because this baby is going to have them.
So I'll have to mount servos for the release in each wing and make the release also.

Well today for something different to make I started on the MK13 torpedoes
Weight 2216 pounds[1]
Length 161 inches[1]
Diameter 22.5 inches[1]
Effective range 6300 yards[1]
Warhead Torpex[1]
Warhead weight 600 pounds[1]
Detonation
mechanism Mk 8, contact[1]
Engine Turbine[1]
Speed 33.5 knots[1]
Guidance
system gyroscope[1]
These are big torpedoes; 161" = 13' 5"
with scale my plane is 15/16" = 1 foot
The PBY has a 104" WS
So that makes them just over 13" to match scale, just about the wing width.
For the body (tube) I went to a electric supply house and bought the plastic tubes they put around fluorescent bulbs. 1 1/4" D this is a bit smaller than scale but very close.
I still have quite a bit to do on them yet but wanted to show as I made them encase some one may need to make some for there build.

HI everybody progress update I kept on working on the Torps. (fish) yesterday evening and glassed the aft foam section w/ 3/4oz cloth and WB Poly just enough to fill the weave.
I also cut out the props. form some light Alum and filed them into there shape.
After sanding the fish real well I shot them w/ two coats of high build Auto primer,
and now have started w/ spot putty.
i need to go back and check my math and make sure these are really this big before I glue in the nose.
Next I start making the fins and try and get all of the pieces on before any more primer is sprayed the finished torpedoes will be grey.

Okay here's a photo up date before I take the torpedoes to final detail & paint.
I still haven't made up my mind on how I'll paint them sum were all grey
And some were black & grey.
I ended up cutting them down 1" to make them scale.
Have a look and tell me what you think.

Bruce might I make a suggestion, on your blind nut installation, make an
additional piece with a recess in it the depth of the metal nut and glue over
it as a "just in case" it happens to work out of the wood over time. That way
you will not have to open up the wing again to retrieve it and re-seat it.
BTW it is really great what you have done on this aircraft, keep up the
beautiful work you are doing, following your progress on both sites.

Thank you Bill...It's funny you should say that about the T-nuts at first I had the type of T-nut that lets you put three screws
in the back side just for that reason; but the threaded part was only 1/4".
The ones that I put in are 3/8"-1/2" thread and I had glued them in w/ thin CA but I wasn't happy w/ that either so I put two
cap head servo screws w/ the washer right were the prongs are bent just to be sure.
I haven't posted any on that part since I added those but thank you for pointing that out I may had missed that and then I would have to cut the silk no fun!!
The torpedoes are detailed and have been sprayed w/ grey semi gloss home mixed Rust-Oleum Pro high performance enamel the tips will get the same but in black gloss.
Bill what other site are you looking at if I may ask?

Bruce the method you have used is a good one, keeps glue from
getting on the threads of the blind nut, never thought of doing it
that way myself but will probably consider that way when I start
my next Bud Nosen Cessna 310 build next spring. The other
site I have been following you on is RC Groups.
Bill D.
Oh & BTW your Signature should be: "JACK OF NONE, MASTER CREATOR OF ALL"
Again keep up the excellent work............

Alright here's what I've been doing today this will be in two posts.
FIRST:
I detailed the Torpedoes w/ panel lines screws access holes.
Then I shot them w/ two coats Rust-Oleum Pro self mixed grey.
Now they have to cure before I shoot the black. (tomorrow)
While I was working on my release the UPS man showed up w/ my plywood order; I've found a good source for Baltic Birch 1/8" 3 ply.
I know you purest out there won't use this but it's fine for me in most places I still use 5 ply where really needed!
Anyway the place is on line order w shipping included I'm tired of getting ripped off at the hobby store for the price of one sheet.
It came well wrapped in plastic 12-20"x 30" x 1/8" and because I ordered on line $10 off so they were $48.99
Now I'm ready when i get My set of drawings for BV-138
Here's the link.

And some photos,
Bruce

Torpedo / bomb release part 1

Well I know the first thing someone is going to say is that tower or some other hobby store sells them for $5 but that's not the point.
I looked on line and there were some homemade releases nothing I would use
So I have tried to show this as best I can w/ out telling you just w/ photos
Just ask if I didn't cover or it's not clear.
This is a work in progress.
