Quarter Scale Grumman Widgeon
This quarter scale Widgeon is based on a scratch-built Super Widgeon model by Al Franklin of Gig Harbor, Washington. The classic Widgeon nacelle molds were made by Stan’s Fiber Tech. The short kit for this model, with either the classic Ranger or Al’s Super Widgeon flat-four nacelles, is sold by G&P Sales. Construction is molded fiberglass hull, nacelles and tip floats, with foam wing and tail skinned with balsa and fiberglass. The finish is F&M Stits Poly-Tone. The color scheme is from Roy Mabbe's full-scale, hangared at the Chino, CA airport.
My airplane is powered by two JAG Ryobi 31cc gas engines with CH ignition and weighs about 51 lb., with a 10-ft. wing span. The radio equipment is Futaba 9VAP or 9CAP PCM, with nine Hi-Tec servos. Differential throttle control, linked to the rudder stick, helps to steer the model on the water (the Widgeon had no water rudder.) The model has operating flaps. The wheels are dummies, but Robart sells a full set of Al’s scale retracts. As of November, 2003, it has had 18 flights. Four of these flights were in a previous incarnation as a 1941 Coast Guard J4F-1, which had to be rebuilt after an “unplanned hard landing.” It won the Pilot's Choice award at the Lake Havasu, AZ Desert Classic float fly, and has flown at Lake Shuswap in B.C. and Lakes Casitas, Perris and Hennessey in California.

Thanks for the compliments. The hull, nacelle cowlings and tip floats are fiberglass moldings. The wing and tail feathers are foam core, balsa-covered and glassed. The short kit is available from G&P. [email protected] for more info.
The finish is Stits Feathercote primer, and Stits Polytone paint, from F&M. [email protected] for more info.
The engines are Ryobi weed trimmer 2-stroke 31cc gas engines with the JAG conversion. They swing a 16-8 Master Airscrew prop at 8100 rpm. More engine and Widgeon info on www.jagengines.com

You never know! My sister lives in St. Paul, practically next door. I almost took a job in Menominee Falls once.
