Finishing Floats
I just bought a set of floats from Plane Fun Floats. They are great looking and I'm trying to decide how best to finish them. I thought fiberglassing would be a good way but what do you guys think? Fiberglass or monocote?

RE: Finishing Floats
Personally i prefer to cover my wood floats with glass. Just my preference though. I think it makes the floats a little stronger and more durable and will help keep them watertight longer.

Finishing with light weight fiberglass cloth is easy with water based polyurethane varnish. You can pick up a quart at any of the home improvement stores along with a couple of foan brushes. Regular brushes sometimes cause the poly-u to bubble. The throw-away foam ones are the best. Get the INTERIOR type varnish, not exterion which has additives that yellow with age.
Paint on a light coat and let dry. A heavy coat, since it is water based, tends to expand the balsa. Sand lightly, then lay the glass cloth over the float and paint it down. After it dries, sand lightly and give it another coat. You're done except for color. It's easy, it works great and it's light.
