Default Float size???

Hello all, I am picking up a Modeltech Magic 3D next week and want to put a set of floats on this plane. Is there some sort of chart or guide to go with what size plane and weight to use? What a good brand would be.....and if anyone has an old set so I can go to a float fly? Thanks Tim

Yep. Float length is 75-80% of the fuselage length from the prop to the rudder hinge.

Here's a link to a good article to help you with your setup and selection.

Post pics of the plane when you have it done. I have a buddy that flies the Morris profile planes with floats. I'll bet the Magic will be a lot of fun.

Jim is right on. Also, try to have at least 2" of float in front of the prop arc (I'm sure this is mentioned in the site Jim gave).

Hey Jim. I have a Sudokhoi and am building a Knife right now. I'd love to see pics of your buds Morris planes on floats.

Default That's really cool!!!

Nice lake too. Do they still have the vertical and aerobatic capabilities with the floats on? I'm sure they're still aerobatic, I'm just wondering how different the performance is from the wheeled planes? Thanks for the pics!

I think Jerry has the Morris engine on his, and yeah, it goes vertical. The floats are just for taxiing. He blasts off like a patriot missile.

I'm sure Chip Hyde can notice a difference, but to me and most everybody else, properly selected and installed floats don't cause much of a performance penalty. Bad floats, heavy floats, or poorly installed floats can screw you up. Most planes I see have the same or very similar takeoff run with float as with wheels and if anything the landing run can be longer on floats.

Jerry makes his own floats from foam, carves them to a streamline (schneider-style) shape, and glasses them.
