Converting a land plane

Thread Starter

I'm going on a houseboat later in the year and would love to take the opportunity to convert my Western 40 trainer to a floater. I have never flown from water before and would like some advice. What floats should i get? I would rater buy some that are ready to go rather than build some. What about a water rudder?
I know this type of question probably gets asked a lot but a gentle shove in the right direction would be appreciated.
(Also any pic's would be good)

Here are some asian floats (SF) which you should be able to get in Oz. Read the "Sig Smooth Floats" thread for a lot of good info in one place. Also, check with your local hobby shop to see what he can get for you.

Here's a link to an article to tell you how to select them and install them properly on your plane.

I do a houseboat trip twice a year. I usually take two planes with me and it is a blast. If you have a 40 sized plane, try "www.falcon-trading.com" they sell plastic floats for their ready float plane. They are easy to mount and are really tuff.
Have fun

Grant Ed,
By all means do so. Float flying is awesome. Make sure your engine is reliable and you are ready to go. I've had great luck with home made white foam floats. There's ton's of info right here on RCU. Enjoy!
