P.S
THIS IS an copy but is still not correct!...look the pic.

AT6:

What scale are you building yours? (1/12, 1/10, etc.) I can't remember. Robart makes some very pretty 8 spoke polished aluminum wheels that would look very nice on your airplane. They are $65 U.S. apiece, and come in sizes from 4" to 6" diameter.
The one on the left is the main wheel.

AT6:

Wow. A 1/5 scale PBY needs 10.5" main wheels. Sheesh. 266mm. I'm beginning to wonder if my measurements are correct. Is that what you determined, also?

Is that 47mm? I've been taking another look at the Novack 108" PBY. I could be persuaded some day.

It's possible this bird will fly next week, weather permitting. If the covering doesn't wear me out first.

Bob, your finish is impeccable . . . I put the cowls on my Sunderland last night and built in the Nacels, got a bit carried away with the black paint me thinks, but it looks alright . . . ill post some pictures laster.

When do you think you'll be finished?

Scott.

I might just get it all done today. Then I have to make the gasket for the pylon to hull, secure the battery and balance it. I think the weight is going to be right at 5 pounds, as I'll have to put some in the nose to get the balance.

Did you make the spray rails for yours up by the bow?

Did it look to you like they are necessary to keep water out of the props? I just took a close look at my prototype, and it has them. Never noticed before.

AT6: just asking Scott his opinion on the spray rails, on the bow.

Here's all I got done today. Good flying weather for the first time in two weeks, so I went to the field and burned up a bunch of fuel.

Very little to do, now: aileron covering and hinging; secure the battery; make the wing saddle gasket; balance. She'll be RTF this weekend.

Ready to fly. All up 5.5 pounds. Heavier than I wanted, but still should be ok, as the Astros provide a total of over 600W. As long as we're at 100W per pound or beyond it, the heavier than air gods will be appeased.

The wing is now a permanent part of the hull. Someday I may talk about that.

We had one lovely hour this morning of flat water and no wind. I don't expect that again for another month, at least.

Had a little trouble with the wing saddle gasket. The release scheme didn't.

This was such a great project, and I had so much fun, and then everything went to hell in the last two days.

Perfect morning for flying it- the wind just beginning to come up, and only a ripple on the lake. Equipment that had worked perfectly everytime died. The right motor quit after about 30 seconds of run time, and the left on started turning on and off by itself. I was all I could do to get it back to the beach.

I think I have been soured on electrics. A pair of 5 year old glow motors, properly stored, would not have died like this.

No, no damage.

It seems like there's a shelf life on Astro Cobalt ESCs. This is not the first time I've had one go crazy on me. The motors were pulling hard together last night during the last preflight test, so I'm reasonably sure there's nothing wrong with them.

The motor wiring and ESCs are all accesible through the covering on the bottom of the wing, so I may yet get it flying with a new pair of ESCs. No money, right now, though. I'm going to finish the B-25 first, and that will take until Christmas at the earliest.

I just now powered it up, and for awhile, both motors were completely normal, then they started taking turns cutting in and out, and starting from rest at different throttle positions.

I'm really thinking about converting this bird to glow. It would be very easy. The only 15 glow engine I trust, though, is the OS 15CVA.
It can turn 6x4 MAS 3 bladers, which would be really cool. [:-]

Bob, that sounds like your drawing to much current and the voltage is dropping in the packs . . . if yours is as light as mine youll only need 2 x .10's and certaining not BB .15's!
The tanks will only be 2 oz dont forget those .15s BB will empty those v quickly!.

Shame you not over heres, I have 2 spare .10's and 4 spare .15's!

Scott.

Yeah, I did some measuring and I don't think there's anyway to get a 3 or 4 oz tank in there.

The business with the motors happens at low throttle settings. I checked the current some time back, and at wide open it's only 50 amps, a few less than what the motors and escs are rated for. The battery is a 4350 25C, (3S) so it's loafing. The motors are also pushing those 6x4E props at exactly 20,000 rpm, which also in the Astro specs.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing it that's different about this plane compared to my old P-38 is the wing tip floats. I had to use a hitec in one end and a futaba in the other to get reverse rotation, and they have different travels, so one of em (the Futaba) goes further and "chatters" all the time, floats up or floats down. This might be sufficient to make the ESCs get goofy, but I don't think so, as all the other flight controls work normally at the same time, so the power supply to the Rx is OK.

I did notice that the right motor consistently stops before the left, and I'm wondering if the ESC "brake" feature is turned on. I'm going to go through the turn off procedure now. Wish me luck!

OK. Some more info. Spray is getting past the front bearings and into the motors. I never had this happen before, so it took awhile to figure out what was going on. Scott: the Sunderland's motors are high enough up that it might not ever be an issue, but it is something to be aware of. What happens is because the solder joints inside the motor where the wires connect to the three field coils are not insulated, and the water is shorting them together, which makes the speed control freak out, as it is then getting bogus rotor position info off the coils. I doubt this would have any effect on brushed motors- they are too simple.

Where the motor fits into the firewall forms kind of a pocket on the front, so I packed that full of grease. I've used that before to keep water from getting into places it shouldn't.

Today's test was just taxiing around to verify operation, as the wind is way too strong to fly anything. (There's a sheltered cove on the lake where the water is sometimes flat while the rest of the lake is kicking ass.) The water handling is really nice, with the counter rotating props. That little water rudder probably isn't doing anything at all, but when I hang that big air rudder left or right into the propwash on that side, she turns really nicely. She was also almost up on plane at way less than half throttle, so I think the flights are going to be fun.
