GP .40 J3 on Floats!
Well, I finished up my GP .40 J3 this spring. Flown off the land a dozen times or so while I finished up the GP float kit. Flew off the water for the third time this weekend. Was up in the 1000 Islands, Alexandria Bay NY, behind Bolt Castle. Finally had the digital camera with me. Wind was from the NW at 7-11 mph.
It's the .40 kit...Full wing, standard servos, OS .52 FS running a APC 11x7.5. Will get the scale out this week. Takes full throttle to get off the water, 2/3 throttle once she is up to fly comfortably. I fly less than half throttle on land. IMO, this engine is perfect...the .70 would be too much.
Water rudder on the floats isn't in yet, I won't fly again w/o it!
If anyone has questions...I'll try to answer!

that's gorgeous! Nice boat and place to fly, too!
All I have is a little pond, and since it is only fed by rain, it is only there...some years...in the winter only

Just flew mine for the first time 6-13-03 it is the same cub w/ a 61 os in it. I never had so much fun as flying off the water. The thing got off in about 40 feet or so, had lots of power, had to fly it at 1/2 throttle, or it clumbed like a homesick angel. Any way i got 10 flights on it now this last weekend. I'm glad more people are "getting it". Float Flying is more fun than flying with wheels.
With a scale-like plane, I like to do scale-like takeoffs: Add only about as much power as it takes to fly, let it accelerate gently, and lift off very gradually after a 200-300 foot run. Climb at a verrrry shallow angle, and do everything as gently as possible, leaving a trail of droplets on the surface of the lake. It looks so real that way.
OTOH, it does not look believable when a Cub has so much power the plane stays still but becomes airborne in 2 feet because the prop blast pushes the lake down. THis is a kick with a fun-fly plane on floats, though.
