I've built 3 LT-40s from kits, SIG instruction manuals are excellent, just don't jump ahead. you will end up with a great flying, and sturdy airplane. Put your own covering scheme on it. The fun part of building is, when it takes off and flies, there is a feeling that you have accomplished something, and besides it is a wonderful float plane.
good luck

Capt,

I know the feeling well. This will be my 5th balsa kit. I've also scratch built 5 or 6 SPADS when I was flying those. As much as I hate winter, I'm looking forward to sniffing some glue and making some balsa dust!!

Hey, me too! I'm going to re-live my first building experience. I'm doing an Eagle II kit, just like I did 11 years ago. It will have the more aerobatic wing, a few mods, a Saito .72 and a set of Plane Fun Floats which I just ordered. Looking forward to Autumn/Winter a bit now here as well! Wife always wanted me to build a purple airplane, and so purple it shall be! Purple with some white trim designs. By April of 2010 it should be hitting the lake for a maiden! That's only 9 months away.

I like the smell of glue and even the smell of warm iron on covering. It should be fun!

Hey Seaplane,
I have a old full build RCM Trainer that I want to convert to my first float plane. Where are your floats sold? Foam core would be great.
Going to have to have some help to convert. Does yours come with a water rudder?

And, Ralph (Seaplane) takes PayPal, which is convenient. I've read his workmanship is quite excellent. I ordered a set, and I'm sure they will work out fine for my trainer on floats project.

Old n Slow,
No I do not include water rudders, but Ernst makes good ones and Tower Hobbies carries them. I bought a couple Williams Bros. rudders recently, and after comparing them to Ernst, I think the Ernst are much better.

Yep. Seaplane is right(as usual). Ernst rudders are best.

If you have an unusual installation and the Ernst rudders just won't fit, you can make a rudder out of K&S brass sheet, or an old credit card, or the clear plastic stuff left over from the blister pack that everything comes in, or window stock. I Used with a brass hinge imbedded in the back of whatever it is that gets the rudder. A plastic hinge would also work. I had success letting it kick up by threading a 4-40 x 1 1/2" screw thru the rudder/hinge, then using a nylon insert nut tightened down so it just had no slop but wasn't tight, then an aileron horn on the end of the 4-40 screw. Activate with a pushrod or with a longer piece of 4-40 stud, use 2 ail horns, 2 nylon insert nuts, and pullpulls.

I will draw one of my famous pictures if necessary.
