Inverted engine and airfoil?

I recall there was some discussion surrounding the engine orientation - more around the concern about the danger of the cylinder being inverted. Hopefully Seth is still around and will pop on and...

RE: New Brushless/ESC combo goes up in smoke

Thanks for the note.

The base plate is actually clamped in a vice with enough pressure to hold it in place.

I suspect the windings weren't finished cleanly durning assembly and there is...

New Brushless/ESC combo goes up in smoke

This is EXTREMELY frustrating. Out of the box, the ECS stepping is fouled and overloads the windings on the brushless motor.

See the video for details.

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

Is Fritz to scale? Was the cockpit really that tight?

The gauges turned out fantastic. Very convincing we're looking at a full scale aircraft!

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

It's great to see this project come together in the air.

Nice job Seth.

p.s. The broken landing gear really hurt!

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

Any lighter it might not stay on - presuming it stays on during flying.

I've seen sacrificial forms - once the shell is complete, the forms are dissolved with some liquid and poured out to...

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

The added weight will serve to create a realistic top flight speed.

That's pretty interesting that you consider the covering as a structural addition to the frame; I hope you never have to test...

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

I guess a perfectionist is never satisfied!

It looks fantastic regardless of maybe missing some expectations. My trip to D.C. ends Thursday - guess I won't be able to jump up to Jersey to see...

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

That's a great looking aircraft!

We take aviation for granted, 100 years plus since the Wright brothers first took flight. But consider that in 1918 - aviation was still in it's infancy. This...

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

With my impatience, it would already have fuel stains and a few taxis under it's belt. LOL!

It's looking great Seth. Do you have a videographer and editor for the upcoming flights? (no rush)

Ouch - that is collateral damage. How much are the scale engines and do they really put out the needed horse power?

That second gunner reminds me of Matthew Perry - the actor from "Friends" LOL!!

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

It's really coming together nicely.

Funny, that servo weighs about as much as the finished projects I work on - well, it would if I HAD a finished project!

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

Pride and vanity are the only reasons I've held off getting glasses this long - I'm just not willing to admit it's time. :-) It's making work on those projects tougher.

I'll check out the local...

I have to chuckle - there's a practical side to building small, I still have planes that I built in while in high school in the hangar. After 28 years, It's getting crowded!

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

So, if Kevlar is not the answer (and I echo the thoughts - working with the stuff is a real pain) what IS the answer. And remember, I'm working with 30" span electric R/C so steel cable is really out...

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

Curious - what's the motive for steel cable over kevlar line? Aesthetics only?

Very clever arrangement Seth.

RE: 1/4 scale Pfalz DXV

Well, the skis idea was completely tongue-in-check - more a reference to how fast this build is going for you compared to the DIII.

On the seam, I was thinking of some sort of faux finish layer...

Seth,

It's looking great.

So your query for attach points were for the wing panels then? It makes sense seeing the current progress photos.

The rare earth magnets would actually work...

Really, really, really strong magnets! ;-)

Rare earths actually works very well on the small models...
