RE: Engine Mount drill holes

"The weight penalty for 4 washers and nylock nuts is minimal".

True enough- but it starts adding up before long. It's a slippery slope when it comes to weight; "This is just a little extra...

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size

This question was asked in post 111 and no one seemed to pick up on my comments. There's a fundamental problem with the servo/elevator set-up on this plane: the servo axis to elevator axis distance...

RE: Engine Mount Modification ? Opinions

For the $5 bucks it costs for a Hayes mount, I'd save the aluminum mount for another project. A lot of work to save $5 bucks....

RE: gaps between control surfaces

I can't envision a reason not to seal the gap other than the time it takes- which really isn't much if you use clear covering. Sharper response, lower stall speed- it's all good.

RE: Linkages, Horns, EZ-connectors, Z-bends Etc.

Paul's site it great and with rare exception, I agree with everything put forth. But those Z-bends... As I've said, many, many times, we don't use 'em on full size airplanes and I have no intention...

RE: Engine Mount drill holes

Carpet tape... Now that's a good idea, never ocurred to me. And, yes, I've "gone for it" and put 'em all in at once... And succeeded! Sort of depends on whether "I'm feelin' lucky" that day.

RE: Engine Mount drill holes

FBD, I like the aluminum screws! An added benefit is the built in weak link- they should shear before breaking a lug. Personally, I'd skip the washers- I rarely use washers except when dealing with...

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size

Just picked up one of these and plan to use a ST 90 with Pitts, mounted at 90 degrees. There's one question I haven't seen asked: What about the elevator servos and the differeing heights relative to...

RE: improvised thread lock

Huh. That fishing line trick never occured to me (well, there are lot of things that don't occur to me!). Have to give that try.

RE: improvised thread lock

Ditto. Not sure I could justify being in this hobby if I couldn't spring for a small bottle of Loctite.

RE: MDS engines and FAI fuel

Well put and exactly the point I was- apparently- unable to make and the point behind my comments about lowering the compression ratio and leaning the mixture. I think we're having a little...

RE: MDS engines and FAI fuel

Dar,

I'm a "glow fella", too, so I'm not unfamiliar with glow engines. Detonation is an uncontrolled combustion rather than a controlled, even combustion- rather than 'maximum cylinder pressure...

RE: MDS engines and FAI fuel

A leaner mixture in a spark ignition engine does not equate to advancing the ignition timing; it equates into a possible scenario of pre-ignition or detonation, two distinctly different actions....

RE: Have you had an O.S. engine peel its cheap nickel liner :(

Hey, maybe things are on the upswing and I need to give 'em more credit... It's tough, though, when you've had less than favorable experiences in the past- a little bit of that goes a long way.

RE: Have you had an O.S. engine peel its cheap nickel liner :(

Customer service is what this comes down to and Tower/hobby services don't know the first thing about it. I'm not going to go into the painful details of my experiences with Tower and their piss-poor...

RE: Have you had an O.S. engine peel its cheap nickel liner :(

RE: putting your plane on a diet

Glad to see I'm not alone regarding this; it floors me everytime I see a 1/2-3/4" extra hanging out of a nut or mounting point. Drop washers where you don't need them, too. Button head cap screws I...

RE: Have you had an O.S. engine peel its cheap nickel liner :(

Hmm. I wonder how he'll respond when I send a box of peeled cylinders to him. Sure would love to get some of my old OS engines back to running condition.
