Gas v. Electric for for long range

I am interested in a list of pros and cons to using gas engines v electric motors with respect to hazards, complexity, and just general ideas about the two. I am looking to build long range planes...

RE: Modeling flight efficiency as fuel is consumed

This site caught my interest a few weeks ago. Great information. I have wanted to use the saito gas engines for over two years now and finally we have been able to quantify that electric power is not...

RE: Modeling flight efficiency as fuel is consumed

Thanks for your input. I have built the model and used the data logger on the speed control to determine the current draw during the flight. For climb it used 11.6 A of power and cruise it used less...

Modeling flight efficiency as fuel is consumed

I am wondering where to start on a project I have taken on for work comparing gas v. electric power. I am going for long range aircraft and so far the best we can do is about 75 miles distance with...

RE: Twice the scale, now how about the motor?

I have thought of that. This plane would be used for mostly level flying, no loops or rolls, and my goal is to increase the size to increase the payload for a much longer flight.

How to quantify two different designs without wind tunnel

How would I go about mathematically proving that one plane is more aerodynamically efficient than another without using a wind tunnel? The inputs I have are airspeed from a pitot tube, battery life...

Twice the scale, now how about the motor?

If I double the size of an airplane, by what factor do I need to increase the power to keep it flying? Also could someone provide me with mathematical reasoning behind your statement?

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

does anyone know how far away the carb should be from the engine block? i know on a hi-rise car engine the idea is to allow more time and speed for better fuel atomization but how far is too far or...

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

ok, i put a few drops of oil in and it jumped the compression up to 45 psi and thats about all. i had the engine apart and only ran it for a coulpe hours so the rings might not be seated yet. i have...

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

the engine did have a decompressop, but i used some shim stock and blocked that off :)

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

i actually did the compression check with out a carb on it. should i get a re-ring kit and have the cyl honed? possibly a new piston? i dont see too many scuffs on the piston and the cyl has a cast...

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

Correction. i must have done the math wrong on my 50cc engine. i think i multiplied the 5.6 cuin by centimeters squared instead of cm cubed. it is actually a 91cc engine. the carb is a diaphram style...

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

ok, I have an walbro carb and it came off a WEEDEATER brand weedeater, i assume it is a 18 to 20 cc engine. the carb has N3 and 5-4691 cast into it as you are looking at the throttle linkage and...

RE: snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

Lars, thanks for the info. it makes a bit more sense. also when you said

"You can tap or epoxy a fitting into the pump cover side of the carb,
so that you can use a tube between case and...

snowblower engine conversion, carb conversion

I have an old 2 stroke 50cc 3 hp toro S200 snowblower engine i converted to a airplane engine. its overall weight with flywheel and ignition is 5.5 lbs. it easily swings a 20x10 prop but i dont know...

custom boat tech?

Does anyone know the ideal boat size to horseopwer ratio? Also is there a link where I can find formulas to build an ideal tuned pipe depending on engine displacement?
