Uh, you should be getting close to 10 minutes of runtime with a 27T motor. What tooth count pinion are you using.

Also, is the drive train free spinning when the motor is out of the chassis?...

I don't think any of the battery manufacturers recommend slow/trickle charges on NiMH batteries. They need to be charged at 3.5 - 5.0amps.

You should be able to get 5 minutes of run-time from a properly charged 1700 nicad battery with a 27T Stock motor and ESC, unless the motor is poorly taken care of, and the drive drive was not setup...

Reversing the Positive + and Negative - wires does the exact same thing as rotating the endbell. The reason I said to rotate the end-bell, is because you still wire up everything on the motor exactly...
