Hi All,
I had a chance to take part in a pre-NATs tuneup with Ron and Dave Lockhart last Saturday and I can happily report that the Allure has the proper yaw stability with a Contra.
Regards,

Hi again, Brenner.
I found that section, and WOW ... there is no question in my mind that you made quite an improvement in bearing and gear life with the improvement in stiffness of the system....

Hi Brenner,
I was certain that you'd thought it through!
So you are somehow clamping to the motor's output shaft?
Many moons ago I noticed how much heat my wet engines lost through the spinner...

Hi Brenner,
The prospect of a 5 ounce weight savings with the Kontronic motor is astounding.
Can I assume that you've discussed this application with Herr Konrath?
Maybe the RPM rating for the...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi Jim!
Do you mean the location of the wing in my crude little model? If so, please ignore that: I drew a wing in there just to lend credence to the notion that you were looking at the side view...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

The plank?
Naw, that was Nat Penton's "UM" series of planes. Nat said it stood for Ultimate machine, but I know it was really ugly M.... !

As far as the effect during cruise is concerned, it...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi Gang,
Hopefully the picture uploaded.
I modeled the fuselage as a 75" long, 10" tall plank with a 6" tall and 10" wide fin/rudder at the back.
The prop(s) were modelled as 10 square inches...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi Guys,
Yeah Brenner, 1/4" was too low, I rechecked my verrry crude calculation and came up with a little ove 1/2" ... Ooops!
But, I will recalculate (hopefully tonight) complete with a diagram...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi All,
One could just move the wing forward in the fuselage about 5/8 inch.
That's my conservative estimate of how much the extra prop destablizes the airplane in both pitch and yaw.
I'll do...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi,
Wouldn't that be a 50-50 torque share?

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hello Jim,
Yes, the CG would travel with the wing.

Tony, I should have known that you'd know about this effect. Sorry I missed it in the never-ending thread!
Now I need to find the arcane...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hello Friends,
Something that has not been touched on in the discussion, as far as I can tell ...
A single propeller destabilizes the airplane in both yaw and pitch. It is roughly equivalent to...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hi Jim,
As it turns out, just after the Worlds in Ireland, one F3A technical sub-committee member suggested that big electric props were gyros, and therefore E-power should be illegal in F3A!
You...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Thank you, Gentlemen ...
What a shame: no torque sharing and gear maintenance.
Back to the drawing board.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Hello Brian / Serious Power

Did I read correctly? Did you suggest that you've seen a belt-drive contra-rotator?
Details, please!

Best Regards,
Dean Pappas
