Hi RobertS. it is very effective, and helps a lot... no pitch change at 90 degrees and adds much needed drag for much easier, hop-free landings.
You can use also the canards at 90 degrees as a airbrake too, but is a pity to loose the extra margin of control canards give at low speeds.

well suddenly enriquepedia gave it´s 2 cents,LOL.as you may know i´m asking to add on my storm,i´d been told original airbrake is not so effective .thanks for the help.

Our storm went with a belly speed brake and even if It was not as big as the Rookie I used it on landings and they where easy and slow too.
Just as a note a friend and I modified it with canards some years ago... Is a great airplane, even if a bit ugly!

This one is slightly longer than a Hotspot..about 2m lenght and powered by a P-80. Didn´t know that more than one size was available.

I had a New Rookie a few years ago and I fitted the belly airbrake and also used the foreplanes as an airbrake.
The belly airbrake is adequate with idle throttle on my P-80. One tip though, bolt the control horn right through. Don't just glue it to the inner skin as in the instructions. Mine broke free by pulling a piece of inner skin away from the thin foam material in the middle of the laminate.
The canard airbrake is adequate on its own too, with idle throttle. No problems using it at all. It is not gradual however, it is on or off.
Both actingtogether is great. It gives very positive descent and allows a little throttle to be used which makes go-arounds easier. Just firewall the throttle, close the airbrake, flip the foreplane back to normal, retract the gear and ups she goes.
Foran approach on idle throttlewithout any airbrake you need to take her a long long way downwind, come in really low and flat and expect a long float.
With both brakes operating, obstacle clearance on the approach is no longer a problem.

Great pic... and no doubt, in case of a tight airfield with tall obstacles at the headings using both methods would be the best option.

The angle on the picture is ok but should be a lot more maybe around 80 degrees or more. I have a 140 in my Rookie with nearly 200 flights on it and the canards as air brakes have worked florlesly.

Enrique, only a bit ugly, it is really a lot ugly, I don´t know where was thinking the designer in that moment, I am sure nothing good, ha, ha, ha.

Haha.. I don't know what he was thinking, and my canards and paint scheme didn' t helped either.. However, it is very efficient, as it flies fast with little power and the access hatch is inequaled...
. It also did well all kind of weird 3D with a twin axis vector thrust.. Or like the Spanish proverb says.. "Este avion es como el oso, cuanto mas feo mas hermoso!"
