Ive always wondered this but never could find an answer.

While shopping for OS engines, i see we have the ".12 OS CV-R" and a ".12 OS CV and/or .12 CV-X." The CV-R is 1.0 hp, and the CV-X is .56hp. Also, the CV-R is only 10 bucks more than the CV-X.

Now.. the part that has stumped me for quite some time now.. is that why would ANYONE ever purchase a CV-X?? I mean i don't get it.. its .56hp vs 1.0hp for 10 bucks more??? It also revs 6,000rpm less than the CV-R!!! Obviously there is something about it.. because i see it in ST's a LOT in ebay auctions and whatnot.

What is it that makes these CV-X's worth purchasing? The same goes for the .15 CV-X and CV-R.

Standard CV engines are cheaper to rebuild. Duratrax makes a piston/ sleeve for the CV series which only costs $20 on Tower. The "X" at the end means it is a pull start engine. The "R" series use a different piston/ sleeve; that cost about $60 to replace.

So in other words, for 10 bucks less you get the CV-X which is .44hp less than the CV-R, but is 40 bucks cheaper to rebuild? Guess that works if your wanting something slow but cheap.

Don't forget about the pullstart. Alot of people don't want to buy a $70 so they can run thier $100 engine. But then they should just buy the CV-RX... Don't ask me, I just confused myself.

Lots of people like the cv as a begginer engine since it is more controlable. The cv-r is just a ported version with a bigger crank and bearings. And also the x is just a pull start version.

Yeah.. but even the .12CV isnt that much less.. and still seems stupid to me to go with that over a CV-R. I was just at this website reading a review on the EPIC .18 "BIG-BORE" TMaxx 2.5 drop-in (which puts out over 2hp)... they were comparing it to a .15CV-X... again i just dont understand. Whats a .15CV-X doing in a TMaxx in the first place?? Right now the .18 CV-R is 10 bucks CHEAPER at tower! (89.99). NO SENSE! Its gotta be that heatsink that everyone digs...

I have a OS .12cv in my RC10GT, and it's a great little engine, I've had it now for 7 years. Sure it doesn't have the ball's that a cv-r has, but you really don't need that much HP when your racing or having fun.

there's a bit more to it than that, but yeah, that's the jist of it.
back when i bought my first aftermarket nitro engine (a .15CVX) I woulda gone with a .12 or .15 CVR, but at the time, they were $160 and $180, while the CVX was $110

Few years ago the R was almost double the price of the CV. Don't think all the HP figures you read about are written in stone. It's what they do on the track that counts, not when some add promotion person pulls them out of their posterior.

Both of these OS engines are nice. Till the supply of R's dries up it would be my engine of choice between the two. The CV needs one thing to make it the perfect little .12 engine, a better cooling head. They did it with the Hyper but then dropped it out of the lineup. It was rugged, had a wide needle range, and plenty of power for most tracks.

the hyper was a great engine, but cost what the CVR did when it came out. that's why the CV Hyper was d/c'd.
I hope OS doesn't abandon side exhaust motors, and i don't think they will, because then i'm gonna have to replace a whole lotta exhaust manifolds[:@]
