Default Recharging receiver bat.

Put it on the peak charger and went out to cut the grass. I came in and asked the wife if she heard my charger beep. She said "No but I heard a loud bang!" Check it out!!! Well, I'm just glad I didn't have it in my truck when it happened!!!!!

I'll never charge it in the truck EVER now!

doesnt the peak charger stop it when it gets hot
what charger do you have and what settings did you do?
is that why you had to use the AA's in the RX?

I do a slow charge takes about 3-4 hours

Charge them at the same amperage they discharge...eg 1400mAh, charge at 1.4A for 1 hour. Simple. Don't charge rec packs over 2A though. I would blame the charger, maybe the peak detection circuit has had it.

A peak detection charger watches the charge current and battery voltage. It does not detect heat (ok, well some will but not most) so if it was charging too hard it could easily overheat and explode w/o tripping the peak detection circutry.
You did not say what charge rate you had set but as foxy said charging at 1C is about the best balance of time and rate.

Two other quick thoughts...They say not to charge a battery unattended for a reason and second, aren't you glad it wasn't a lipo?? If one of those had done that it would probably have started a pretty good fire.

One other thing,
The rating on the pack 1400mah say, is the capacity and not the discharge rate. While it could discharge at that rate it can also discharge at a much lower or higher rate. The difference being how long the battery would supply power at the actual discharge rate. For example a battery rated at 4000mah will delive 4000 ma for 1 hour, 2000ma for 2 hours or 8000ma for 1/2 hour, etc.
The rating 1C describes the current that it takes to charge a battery in 1 hour. so for a 4000mah battery the 1C rate would be 4 amps.

Thanks for the correction, you know what I meant, I just used the wrong terminology. Iknow how it works, I was just typing quickly and typed the word that came into my head. I also forgot the 'C' unit for charge rate, I should have mentioned that too. Anywayz, hopefully OP is now informed.

Attached is the charger I used. It was on for about 15 minutes when it happened. It was at 1 AMP.

Yes, that's why I was running AA's that day. Bought a new bat and charger from Golden Horizon for $25 cash.

I think you should shell out for a better charger if you want to avoid such incidents in the future.

PS Peak Prediction?!! Woah, a psychic battery charger!! Most wait until peak is reached before deciding to turn off. Maybe it's psychic lowers let it down on that one.

Just a quick funny story about charging an ingiter with almost the same results. A month or so ago I had a lot of people in my shop and after they bought a few things and left I was quit upset because I thought they had stollen an igniter I was charging, the cord was hanging over the stand where it was when it was charging. The next morning I came walking into my Hobby shop and noticed way accross the room was an igniter laying on the floor and as I walked over I was thinking that was strange till I picked it up and the whole top was blown wide open. Made me feel bad about thinking it was stollen. Its just happens like that sometimes. I have batteries charging 24-7 and I don't care about being there and attending the batteries when there charging. What if I was there and the darn thing hit me in the head[] That wouldn't tickel[&o]

I know it's a peak charger (or at least it thinks it is), you've quoted me above and note that I didn't say anything about it not being a peak charger, I was laughing at the wording. Prophet, peak PREDICTION lol! I'm just telling you to get a better one. $60 for a charger is false economy, trust me.

My buddy gave me a prophet plus for free so ill use it . Im almost always in a hurry so I charge my batteries at 4 amps for a quick charge. I know I shouldnt, but when you have 2 hours and 3 batteries to charge you really dont have alot of options.

I do remember being young 12-13 I had gotten a tyco rc car it was fast for a cheap car. I was charging the flat cell pack behind the couch one day when it started smoking and making poping noices luckily I got it outside before it started a fire and tossed it int he snow bank . Just trying to say even for a purpose built charger sometimes the battery packs go to hell.

When you buy a charger, one thing to look for in the specks is, short protection or detection. You have a good charger (I have one) but your battery was probably getting week and a sell shorted out, the charger didn't detect it and kept charging and Booooom. It can happen with any charger that doesn't have short protection or detection, regardless of $$$ spent. Another good thing to look for is cross polarity protection.

Well, I'm not looking to buy a new charger as I already have this one. But I did buy a new hump pack with slow charger. So I'll just use that. But I still will not charge it in the truck. Thats for sure!

I ordered this charger for my preparation for a Savage. To use this for charging receiver packs, is it a good idea to charge it at .7 or .8 amp to play it safe?
