Default Savage X fuel mix ?

OK, first of all, this is my first Nitro of any kind. I'm learning, but at a VERY slow pace!!

I got my Savage broke in per manufacturer directions (1 tank at idle, 2 tanks half throttle in a circle. Then a tank at half throttle for a couple of seconds, let off, do again until the tank went dry). Per the manual, that's four tanks and I should be broken in and ready to go!

I'm now working on leaning out the carb to "get maximum performance". I'm about 3/4's of a turn to the high speed screw, and at my experience level, it's running plenty fast for me until I get a little more used to it.

My question is this: At 3/4 turn into "lean", my temps are running 180 to 190. The manual says I should set it to run between 190 and 250. So, am I hurting anything by keeping it where it's at for a few more tanks until I get used to the handling, or should I lean it out until I'm running temps in the 220 range and just stay out of the throttle until I get the hang of things?

Feel free to elaborate on your answer, as any help is appreciated for this rookie!!

When you are taking the temperature, is the body on or off? During break in, i use some foil around the cooling head to bring up the temps in the 200's and still stay rich enough for break in. I personally don't think it is wise to run cooler temperatures under 200. I have read that you can cause excessive wear on the sleeve if it does not get up the operating temps.

There is a lot talk of what temp to run the Savage X at. I have heard 230-260 even at 300 which I do not recommend. I run mine at 195 to 210 roughlly. I also made holes on my Savage X body on the front windshield for better air pass though and tune my engine like that.. Use a Temp gun that helps a lot..

Run that baby at those 190 temps as long as you don't foul plugs or load up the engine. Higher temps more wear on the engine. If your not carzy with race addiction and just out having fun you might just run 15 gallons of fuel threw that thing and then some, without it becoming a dog before its time. I don't do that but I see it done all the time. Me I want to go fast and replace the engine and go faster and if all my customers did that I would make better money but your not close enough that it matters.................lol..............good luck and have some fun, don't forget to support your LHS

Go ahead and turn the HSN in and keep the engine temeps at 220 to 250degrees F; this is the operating temps for a F4.1 or K4.6 engine. More importantly, listen to the sound of the engine; when you have the engine tuned for performance and a good idle with excellent acceleration, remember the sounds. Thoe engine sounds are also a major tool to tell you if the engine is in tune. Temps can sometimes lie to you.
