Default Buying a used Savage

Hey everyone! I'm fairly new to nitro r/c, but the bug has bitten! I currently own a Firestorm, and enjoy running our local track, but it is a handful in the loose, rutted dirt. I have driven my buddies savage x out there and love the "point and shoot" attitude of the 4wd rigs. My question is: I have found a special edition savage .25, that is now powered by a sure fire .32 w/p.s. and a 3 speed. New "x" chassis with the .25 stock diffs. Stock servos, stock radio, dirt bones tires, and the blue and grey stock body was put away when new, so it is flawless. The engine was used when he installed it, so it is the only item I would question. It screams, and seemed to fire-up quickly so it's probably fine. Nova aluminum bulkheads and T-maxx shocks with dual rate springs. Asking $250. My buddy with the X who works at a hobby store and knows the fella selling it, told me to jump on it, so I probably will, but I would like a 2nd opinion, or 3rd, 4th, etc. I see savage .25's going on ebay for around $150-$200, so I wanted to make sure the upgrades justify the price jump. I know the engine goes for $200 new, but it's used. Let me know about any red flags, and I thank you for any and all advice!

I would buy it.

The Racer's Edge Surefire .32 is the same thing as an Axial .32, and it's a good engine(hopefully it was taken care of). The Nova shock towers are nice and still allow you to run Savage style shocks if you wanted to. The only iffy part is the Savage X style chassis if it's the earlier version with the weak spot, but those are easy to change.

As for the stock body and wheels/dirtbonz, I would just hang onto them and run something else. The Savage 25 Limited Edition(LE) is the lowest production version of the Savage so far, and you never know what that might turn into down the road. I'm not one to usually worry about the collector value of such things, but you have to consider it when you look at what some of the hard to find vintage RC stuff is going for these days. The LE body was based on an optional Savage 21 paint scheme but it had Savage 25 style decals... no specific replacement bodies were made available as far as I know. The Dirtbonz are nothing special, but they came preglued and the HPI foams suck. Save them for shelf display purposes.

You will want to upgrade those diffs pretty soon with a RE .32 and three speed transmission.

Thanks fellas! You guys are fast. By the end of my post I pretty much had my mind made up to get it..... went to see him today and he took it out for me for a final run through, and after running it around in the yard a bit, we went to start it back up and the pull start broke (will not recoil). Probably broke the spring.[sm=confused.gif] So I gave him $50 to hang on to it, contingent on repairing the broken pull start. He was just fine with that, so it sounds like a done deal.
By the way, he said he could put a roto-start back plate on in leu of repairing the P/S. I said I would rather have the P/S just so I don't have to carry around a roto-starter with me (more blasted batteries to go dead at inoppertune moments), IF, he has the parts on hand to repair it, if not, roto-start it is. Thanx, Clint.

The spring probably got caught on the string its really hard to break those springs. I would have jumped on it too 250 for a fully working savage is a great deal.
