News just released for Jet Power by Wren. Their new smaller Turbo Prop based on the MW 44.
I have two of these on order for my 27% Cessna 425 Twin Turboprop. There is a build thread over in Giant scale. Power is in the range of 21 to 24 lbs of thrust.
The 44 price is 2425 GBP and will be available with kero start in the future.
The MW 54 size turbo prop now has a new gearbox (swings a larger prop- up to 30")and has a new price of 2548 GBP
The helicopter edition in the 44 size will also be available soon with a price of 2425 GBP
cheers,

Very good news.
A pair in this aircraft would be spectacular indeed.
The best part is the Starship is a known quantity as it has been flown on several occasions on glow power - twin Moki 1.8's

Yes, this is great news indeed...as the planes progress has been on hold while waiting for Wren to test this new powerplant. The plane should finish up rather quickly and hopefully be ready for next years flying season. Also....I do have an extra new XL 200 here at the shop........

I think this engine wil be a top seller for Wren. The heli market has been waiting for a engine of this size for too long. The 54 size engine only ran at something like 70 per cent power in even the biggest 3m models so this smaller, lighter engine is the way to go. Also, no one else has managed to make a 44 size production engine yet so that will mean Wren won't have to worry about Jetjoe or the like copying this new powerplant.

What models do we think will be suitable for this engine?
Will it be powerful enough for Graupner or Airworld Turbo Raven? What about other options?
NO1, can you explain the prices you have posted? I assume they are US prices (albeit in £) but even adding UK VAT at 17.5% the price you have posted for the 54 turboprop is cheaper than indicated on the Wren website.

Yes!
The prices posted are taken from an email I received from Wren (Sara). I am sure she will comment here once she returns from Jetpower...
The first 44 size motors were tested in 2 meter sized pattern planes...I believe....
One of the neat features of this new TP is that it incorporates a firewall style mounting...no worries regarding supporting the gearbox with additional forward mounts..

Silly question time!!
Is the gas generator a 'standard' 44 gold and is it a simple fit onto the power turbine/gearbox? Has the gearbox been tried on older 'green' engines? (you can probably guess where I am going with this

Sarah's at Jetpower is'nt she..

Siclick33..
I went through the same thought process with a 54..
..IIRC its the same basic gas generator but a different turbine wheel and pressure takeoff on the front of the engine.Fabulous things though... [:-]..cutaway is a 54

I'm back! JetPower was totally brilliant, there is nothing like it in the world.
To answer the questions: The prices Ron quoted were the international prices, without VAT. The latest version of the MW54 Turboprop will have a lower price - it will all be on the website soon.
The 44 Turboprop uses a standard 44 Gold. It might be difficult to use an older 44 engine because they were more temperamental and can't use Autostart, so I think it would be very unlikely that we will be prepared to convert an older engine to a turboprop. The usual advice would be to sell the old engine and put the money towards the turboprop.
The 44 Turboprop flew at Jetpower in a Turbo Porter, wingspan 2.5 metres, weight 8 kilos. With pilot Lucien Gerard on the sticks, the Porter first towed up a 2.9m F3B glider, and after the glider was successfully released Lucien then unfurled a banner with "Wren Turbines - World Leader in Miniature Turbines" which was towed round the sky.
Here's a picture of the Porter, which is covered with WREN stickers because we were determined that everyone would know what the powerplant was!
Lucien has put a second 44 turboprop engine into this P51D Mustang - we had it on display on our tradestand. There was a turboprop Mustang built at the end of the second World War, so there is a precedent.

It hasn't flown yet, we only completed the install just in time for the show. Flying time is very limited at JetPower because there are over 70 traders so each company has only 2 ten-to-twelve minute slots in the three days of the event. We were also displaying the XL200 and the 44 helicopter and there wasn't enough flying time for two turboprops.

It is very good in theory to sell the green and buy the turboprop but now the gold is out the second hand value of the older engines is not that high (comparitively). It is worth more to me as an engine than as its cash value (unless you can do a good part ex deal

You're right, the earlier 44s were good little engines when the customers got them, but it took a lot of work here to get them to that state.
I've now had a word with the guys about the possibility of converting older engines and they've said it's not possible. All the development work for the 44 turboprop has been done on the 44 Gold. The earlier engines had different parts, in particular the diffuser and turbine wheel, and won't work with the second stage. The old engine would have to be rebuilt with many new parts and it's definitely not worth doing.

How close is the 44 Heli?
Any cost estimates yet?

We are working on the 44 turboprop and 44 helicopter engines together (the first and second stages of the two engines are the same) and we hope both will be in production by the end of the year. Price will be 2500 GBPounds in Europe and 2127 GBP (that's currently about 4250 USD) for the rest of the world.
